COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Pours a nice pale yellow with medium white head, minimal lacing. Aroma of citrus hops, yeast, grass, and a bit of banana. Flavor matches well and comes together nicely for an enjoyable, but different IPA. I am really starting to like this style.

The Belgian funk works surprisingly well with the fruity hops. Assertive yeast - banana, spice - with a trace of booze. Cloudy orange with good white head. Drinkable and different.

Excellent IPA with big but short bitter taste at the end. Belgian tastes were hidden but some sweet, fruity notes were sensible. Very, very good beer.

A solid imperial IPA. The belgian qualities are outstanding. Lots of banana, some spice and bubblegum. The hops are spicy and the finish is surprisingly dry. Orange and transparent.

From local supermarket (AH) in Mestreech. Clear amber color with average-sized white head. Aroma is fruity, spicy and hoppy. Flavour is very rich in hops, and spieces. Alcohol is well hidden. Nicely composed brew.

This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was basically a burnt yet semi - clear orange color yielding a carbonation rising at a moderate pace. A one finger white foamy head lasted about a good thirty seconds before gently subsiding into a messy sort of lacing. The smell had a crisp sweet citrus low hop bitterness running in and out on a slight caramel malt. The taste took all flavors to combine decently. A light crisp citrus sweet and slight caramel maltiness runs in the aftertaste. The finish is mostly dry sweet citrus. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was there and fairly good for the style. It’s pretty dry as it rolls over my palate. Overall, I say this was a pretty good Belgian IPA, good for the style and for me.

Pours a gorgeous deep orange with a single finger of head, which quickly dissipates. Great floral aromas initially, but they subside soon as well. Slight sweetness from the yeast balances out the hop bitterness. Interesting tropical fruit flavors as it warms up. Overall, quite drinkable, and dangerous at 8.3%

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 14B, adapted). Bottle 35.5 cl - Batch unknown. AROMA: predominant caramelized malt aroma with hop notes in the background (tropical fruits). APPEARANCE: coppery color and translucent. avergae ivory head with medium retention. TASTE: initial sweet and malty flavour, followed by a faint resinous and piny hop note with high bitterness that lingers beyond a semi-dry finish. PALATE: medium-light body with medium carbonation. alcohol derived viscosity but with very mild heat sensation. OVERALL: a very interesting IPA variation, more tilted towards the malt but with a hop kick.

Bottle - amber with a foamy, large yellowish head. Excellent retention and a little lacing. Aroma of cinnamon, passion fruit, mango, pineapple and some heavier roasted malts with hints of caramel. Taste of caramel, roasted malts, followed by toffee apple, lemon, mango and a little clove, with grass, bitterness and peat to finish. Heavy body, low carbonation.
