Flying Dog Brewery will celebrate its 20th Anniversary a few months early on Friday, September 25th (the brewery turns 20 next year). The brewery will be sampling the new Raging Bitch Belgian-style India Pale Ale at the Flying dog Brats And Gonzo party in Denver that day as part of the Great American Beer Fest happening that week (unscramble the FBAG acronym to get GABF). More info about the fest can be found on the official Flying Dog blog. The beer also appeared on draft at this past weekend’s Gonzofest party. Al from Hop Talk was in attendance and reported on his blog, “I understand it’s made from an augmented Snake Dog wort with an exclusive Belgian yeast strain (called Diablo) and dry-hopped with a load of Amarillo hops. They’re calling it a Belgian IPA. It was really good. It had that hop bite from a big, bad American IPA with the banana and bubblegum from the Belgian yeast.” Some may remember a beer called, Raging Bitch Birch Beer, that Flying Dog introduced on April 1st. Whereas that low-gravity series beer was a joke, this beer is anything but at 8% ABV (60 IBU). Propaganda from the label: “Two inflammatory words…one wild drink. Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. Let it out. It is cruel to keep a wild animal locked up. Uncap it. Release it…stand back! Wallow in its golden glow in a glass beneath a white foaming head. Remember, enjoying a RAGING BITCH, unleashed, untamed, unbridled – and in heat – is pure GONZO!! It has taken 20 years to get from there to here. Enjoy!” – Ralph Steadman

Pours golden/amber with a yellow head with solid lacing. Citrus and spice smell with lots of perfume. Taste is candy sugar, citus, hops, and alcohol. Solid.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. A stunningly beautiful, clear deep amber with an off-white, almost tan head. Floral scents and citrus. Medium body and bitterness. A bit sticky with a nice subtly bitter finish. Very nice.

355 ml bottle. Clear amber colour with stable head off. Aroma of belgian yeasts, oranges. Taste of yeasts, grapefruits, tangerines, pine, honey sweetness, then huge bitter aftertaste.

5%ABV. Amber ale. Poured out dark amber. 16şSRM. Nose is sweet with treacle, honey and molasses in the nose but without the sour tang. A very clean sweet aroma, like nectar. Hint of bitter pine sap aroma. Mouthfeel is cough syrupy. Palate has an amber ale’s rounded fuller, nutty character. The back of the throat has that aroma-flavor of old leather which I associate with a nice amber. Hops are barely there. Finish is clean and lightly beery.

Sample on tap @ the brewery. Pours a medium caramel brown with a thin white ring. Light Belgian spices but fairly ordinary flavors. Not as good as I expected.

Bottle. Clear orange body, medium tall head. Aroma has sweet citrus fruits, figs, marmalade, piney American hops, mild yeast funk. Pleasant mouthfeel with good carbonation. Taste has dry/piney hops combined with zesty tangerine peel and marmalade. The yeast gives more dryness and also adds some complex "wild" notes which add a lot of depth to this IPA. Very good.

Pours a hazy, pale amber body with a large, creamy, quite dense, off-white head that settles as a layer of foam that leaves lots of laces. Strong aroma of overripe light fruits, oranges, sweet caramel and some yeast. Strong flavour of sweet caramel, overripe light fruits, citrus, red berries and resin. Moderate to light sweet taste with a rather heavy bitter grapefruity and long-lasting finish. Close to full body, smooth texture and soft carbonation. Doesn’t strike me as particularly Belgian or IPA-like, but still a nice brew. It might have been a bit too old.

Tap at Sviatok Piva Myjava. Amber color, thick white head. Aroma of caramel malt, honey, some spices, oranges, grapefruits. Zesty, piney, resiny. Taste is medium sweet of caramel malt, honey and tangerines. Light yeasty. Good citrusy-hoppy finish with zest and resins

Mind you, I have had but a handful of Belgian Style IPAs but Flying Dog has my blessing as the best. Raging Bitch is the most recognizable label. Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. The head is at about two fingers, fluffy, creamy and a bit off white. The color is a polished orange that could be considered a dark copper. The nose opens a bouquet of fresh sweet bread, delicate florals and fruitful esters. Upon tasting I get a flavor with the likes of caramel and sweet bread almost like caramel cake at the top of the tongue. Toward the middle is a more dull sweetness of the malt lend toward the finish which is a bit funky and sweet with hints of lemon and a bit of candied sugar. The hoppiness is lemony and moderately dry. Fantastic.

Clear amber, white moderate head. Belgian yeast, perfumy fruit, honey, melon on nose. Medium body. Dryish flavour. Not much yeast to be detected. Nectar, melon. Smooth. Bitter grapefruit making it an American one. Very good.
