MtStateBeer (75), Hurricane, West Virginia, USA Nov 7, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a reddish mahogany color with a small, but quickly diminishing frothy light brown head, a touch of lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, a hint of chocolate, and a hint of citrus. Flavor is caramel and roasted malts, coffee, and a touch of nuttiness. On the lighter side of medium bodied, fairly creamy with a bitter finish. Pretty good beer, good mix between porter and scottish ale. bsp77 (199), Minnesota, USA Oct 29, 2009 Poured from bottle into pint glass.
Dark brown with a moderate tan head that recedes to a fine line.
Aroma of mild dark chocolate with a musty earthiness that is nice, but a little subdued.
Once again, chocolate is predominant, kind of a dark, bittersweet chocolate. A slight smokiness is present, while bitterness is pretty low. No coffee detectable as in many Robust Porters.
Relatively low carbonation with a medium body that is relatively smooth.
Quite easy to drink as the focus is on semi-dry malt without any major flavor elements (bitterness, sweetness, coffee) to detract. Of course, you could also claim that those major flavor elements could have enhanced it as well. Overall, a very solid Porter I would have again but doesn’t truly stand out.
MikeKeller (39), Finland Oct 27, 2009 Clear reddish brown colour and a small brown head. Sweet aroma has roasted malts. Flavor is sweet roasted malts, dark chocolate and has got a nice bitter end. Not a very fine one but not boring either. Jukkabro (2996), Tampere, Finland Oct 25, 2009 Deep dark red-brown colored with medium sized beige head. Berry aroma with roastiness and some grassy hops, thin dry cocoa note also comes up. Medium bodied. Flavor is more burnt with same dry cocoa and roastiness, aftertaste lasts with dry hops and berries. Rather one dimensional brew. MBison (548), Southern Highlands, Australia Oct 19, 2009 Bottle 355ml. Poured dark ruby brown (almost black) with a good sized, dense, foamy, lightly tanned head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of roasted malts with dark chocolate, toast, coffee, raisins and some nuts. Flavor was a medium earthy hop bitterness with roasted malts, bitter chocolate, toast, black coffee, currents, light notes of plum and a dry finish. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation, a dry toasty mouthfeel and a decent length finish. smith4498 (829), Miami, Florida, USA Oct 19, 2009 Pours very dark brown with tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Flavor is lightly roasted malts with mild sweetness and some chocolate. Medium to full body with soft carbonation. cwondo (21), Rochester, Michigan, USA Oct 15, 2009 Bottle. Brown with quickly dying off-white head. Expected darker. Did not get much aroma. Very light flavor, not too bitter, actually sweet. Watered down palate with carbonation. Did not seem like a porter to me. Flying Dog must put most of their porter muscle into Gonzo Imperial, which is awesome. TampaBrew (749), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 11, 2009 Pours brown with ruby notes, small tan head. Nose is some roasted malt, mild cocoa and coffee, bubblegum, mild fruit notes. Flavor is sharp hop bite, some anise, cocoa, bitter coffee, roasted malt, sweet fruit and diacetyl. 666th rating! Raining Blood Muzak Midi style ROCKS!
