cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 11, 2007 What other beer that you’ve tasted claims that it is “good beer – no shit” on the label? At least it doesn’t use a superlative like best or mostest. Hey, I like porter so I am interested in tasting this stuff. This is a 12 oz brown bottle 18807FX. Pop the lid and you can tell there is something roasty in there, it definitely has a roasty malty aroma that is lacking in many beers. Pour is very dark but not opaque in my steeler stein. Its dark brown with a maroon glow if held up to light. First taste is somewhat stoutish with a mild bitterness. Good carbonation that tingles the tongue. Bitterness builds with each taste. The flavors are that of roasty malts and possibly some hops but not fruity hops. Enjoyable, if you like beer that tastes like it has been filtered thru burnt wood chips. One of the stronger porters I’ve tasted. This is not one of the flavored porters I’ve has like Saranac Caramel Porter or Atwater Vanilla Java Porter. It is just a good example of pure, no frills porter personality. I can drink these without problem if it didn’t have that bitter aftertaste hanging in there. Roasty burnt flavors continue. Yes the finish is slightly bitter and lingers for a minute but not like any imp stout or foreign stout I’ve had. Good porter but not as good as Bells Porter, Michelob Porter or Yuengling Original Black and Tan. Much better than yards general washington and great lakes edmund fitsgerald.
JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 10, 2007 Dark brown with a medium tan head. Light, roasty aroma. Taste is lightly roasted malts with hints of chocolate and nut. A bit thin. Nothing special, but drinkable and non-offensive. moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA Feb 4, 2007 Dark brown with a tan head. Not a lot of aroma--but some sweet malt scents do show up. Easy to drink, this beer has faint caramel malt flavors, and a slight sugary sweetness. TheBeerBaron (218), Florida, USA Feb 2, 2007 Nothing says average these days like the Flying Dog brand with the creepy labels. Black brown color, dissapointing head that never quite formed. No carbonation in the glass. A muted berry and caramel smell. Roasted malt with a cola like flavor. Vary forgettable and hard to pinpoint - more watery than anyting of note. Taste like a lager instead of an ale. A poor choice in a category that is crowded with more interesting (sans label) choices. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Feb 2, 2007 bought from sidney’s...good brown lacing...light roastiness...some berry flavours...good but i bet tap is could be a gem....could be fuller but drinkable.. Hawksfan17 (717), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 31, 2007 Sweet candy roasted aroma. Pours dark brown with a read hue, pretty flat. Light, watery, roasted taste. It is nice and drinkable but there isn’t much there. beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA Jan 30, 2007 12 oz Bottle-Poured a reddish brown color w/a small head. Roasted nutty aroma. Had an amber roasted malt flavor, some yeast & nuts, Some grain. Not real complex, somewhat sweet. Pleasent, drinkable, more like a scotch ale than a porter. Don’t seek it out, but you can drink it if offered. TomDecapolis (3127), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 29, 2007 Pours a translucent deep brown with a bunch of ruby red. Head was on the smaller side, bubbly tan that left hints of lacing. Aroma of toffee, earthy, toasty, some malty sweetness Flavor is very earthy, some toasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, pine, some hop bitterness and hints of smoke.
