Commercial Description:
Brewed in the tradition of centuries old Scottish brewing methods, "Road" is reminiscent of a Porter. Road Dog is a rich, malty beer with hints of chocolate and licorice resulting from the use of four prized malts.

2005 bottle from Julios, consumed 6/16/2005. Deep garnet-auburn with deep stained-oak overtones. Beige head quickly recedes to a ring. Clear and force carbed. Tries to lace, but won’t stick, too much filtration. Smells hoppy, predominantly, light tropical fruits and cherries. Some sweet caramel, but lots of alcohol at first too. Dryish, seems to indicate it will be rather astringent and/or acidic. However, the flavor does not follow from that guess. Light roasty notes and bits of caramel. Lots of fresh hops flavor, fruity and bitter. Alcohol is noticeable. Quick finish with some hops acidity at the end. Seems more like a red IPA with light roast notes. Clean, but for the alcohol apparency. Light creaminess and not poorly malted by any means. Moderate carbonation, medium body.

355ml bottle (Cracked Kettle, Amsterdam)
Deep reddy brown, tiny off-white head. Cocoa powder aroma. Refreshing palate, pleasant carbonation. Fairly burnt taste. Long burnt finish. Decent hops, some raw fruity hop flowers detected. Fairly well balanced. Tasty, but I feel I’ve tasted it many times before. Very easy to drink.
Rerate: similar rating. This time it was a sweeter and more porridgey aroma. Taste was enormously husky, just full of dry grains. Still a very tasty beer - more like a brown ale than a porter. One of Flying Dog’s better brews.

Bottled. Deep ruby colour. Malt is the key on this one. But it does not remind me of a porter. Just a little caramelly and no sign of hops. What was this?

Bottle poured a clear dark mahogany with a small amber head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, coffee, and hints of licorice. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of bakers chocolate, coffee, and cola with a crisp, refreshing finish.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with ruby hues and a large diminishing foamy tan head. Sweet aroma of caramel malt, mild chocolate and some roastiness. Somewhat watery flavour’s sweet and roasty with a hint of smoke, some caramel, chocolate and a light bitter finish. Light to medium bodied. It’s a good beer but it’s a little light and bland, I expected much better.
