3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 dphoxie (60) - North Carolina, USA - JAN 2, 2013i had this one in my cellar for at least a year, i was curious to see how the barrel notes held up. i did get some booziness in the aroma but it wasn’t overpowering. the taste was perfectly balanced between the roast porter and the sweet/smooth from the barrel aging. the weird part of the beer was it felt over carbonated. it had a real prickliness that seemed in opposition to the sweet/smoothness of the flavors. just on odd juxtaposition to feel sort of harsh with such supple flavors on the tongue.

Split a 750ml bottle with mcart034 a week or so ago. Poured a really dark, motor oil color, smooth, and vibrant with a nice, tan, creamy-looking head. Aroma had plenty of oak and vanilla notes, roasted qualities to it - with a coating of bourbon throughout the sniff. Flavor was nice, rich bitter chocolates, with roasted malts, oak, vanilla and bourbon. Alcohol is present, but is very nicely mellow throughout - not harsh at all.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 keanex (830) - Atco, New Jersey, USA - JUN 16, 2013
Corked and caged bottle, no date.
Appearance: Black body with no light visible through, a creamy tan head appears with decent retention. After it settles it still has a nice presence in the form of a thick ring and a completely covering coating.
Aroma: The aroma has huge fruity overtones, like a semi-sweet red wine with hints of cherry and raspberry. Chocolate and bourbon back the wine overtones beautifully with only a hint of alcohol and a touch of roasted presence.
Taste: The wine aromas are present right away on the intro, followed quickly by chocolate that has almost a cocoa powder presence. The flavor becomes a bit thin by the end of the mid-taste though reminiscent of a watered down bourbon. The finish is oaky and winey with watered down bourbon. It’s a shame the taste doesn’t hold up to the body.
Palate: Thick bodied with a soft creamy mouthfeel.
Overall: This could have been great, but unfortunately it falls short of outstanding. This is great though and worth buying.

Tap at Alchemy. Opaque black body. Rusty beige head. Smooth sweet chocolate bourbon aroma. Big, rich, full bodied. Sugary sweet, but lots of depth. Some caramel, bourbon heat, chocolate, licorice, leather, tobacco. Intense, a tad brutal, but a really cool beer.

Bottle vintage 13AA. Poured black with a rim of tan foam. Strong bourbon aroma with minor choco. Not that smooth bitter alcohol bourbon dry resin taste.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jcos (1205) - Maryland, USA - MAY 20, 2013
Location/Date:Bottle on 5/19/2013 split with Dave.
Appearance: Pours a dark opqaue with light brown head..
Aroma: Aroma of whiskey and chocolate.
Taste: Roast, light bitterness, light amount of boozy whiskey, vanilla, chocolate on the end..
Palate:Medium body, slick lingering aftertaste..
Summary: Interesting stuff. At times the amount of whiskey bothered me on occasion, but that is what the beer was going for. I just have to rate all the Flying Dog beers I can get my hands on.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 mcberko (4146) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 20, 2013
750mL bottle, pours black with a medium brown head. Aroma of wood and whiskey upfront, with notes of roasted malt and caramel further back. Flavour is very intense, with rich woody barrel notes upfront, full of whiskey, wood, roasted malt and caramel. Quite highly carbonated for the style. Something in the barrel aging must’ve created the livelier carbonation as the base beer is more regularly carbonated. The hops that are prominent in the base beer aren’t very apparent in this barrel aged version. Great stuff, but I prefer the base beer.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 brystmar (517) - Dallas, Texas, USA - MAY 17, 2013
Really like this aroma: roasty; smooth bourbon; caramel; big, hearty malt character. A bit dry. Good, not great.

Bottle. Pours a pitch black beer with a small, tanned creamy head on top. Aroma has a lot of bourbon, oak and touches of vanilla and roast. Black molasses is present in the aroma as well. Flavor is quite sweet and certainly has some of the oak returning on the palate. Overall very sweet and there is some boozyness in there as well. Far better then I’d expected.

750ML 2012 vintage, solid 20% gusher, 3 finger head fades to nothing. looks still but has some lacing on the swish. Served at cellar temp. you can smell booze from 2 feet away. Loads of chocolate and roasted barley. A hint of vanilla drinkable but inthis format, I don’t know if I could consume an entire 750.
