Commercial Description:
Hunter S. Thompson once said, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Consider this our professional version of Gonzo Imperial Porter. Aged and seasoned for three months in wood barrels from our neighbors at Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, this ale has a well-balanced taste and abundance of character. The taste will remind you of sweet chocolate, dry oak, and smooth whiskey with a memorable, velvety mouthfeel.

A nearly viscous pour of ultra-dark brown was pinned beneath a mammoth tan head that was rocky and slow to dissipate. Good lacing. The aroma was roasted malt, wood, whiskey, vanilla and chocolate. The flavor was roasted malt, chocolate, light coffee and some definite hints of whiskey. No boozy heat, just some defined flavor. The mouthfeel was medium to thick in body and super smooth. Quite enjoyable.

Pours dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roastiness, wood, whiskey, a bit of alcohol. Flavor is nicely balanced. Good stuff.

Shared with Mike Lang over an intense game of Risk with the wives. Pours beautiful black body with thick creamy brown head and good lacing. Chocolate and caramel, Vanilla, wood, oak, plum, raisin, rum, Aroma. English barlywine characteristics in flavor. Slightly oaky and molasses, dark fruit flavors. Medium velvety body with soft mouthfeel and only a slight bit of carbonation. Sweet and even finish. Well balanced, and does a great job of masking the abv. But still isn’t great enough to warrant the $16 price tag.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, altogether murky body with a thin, bubbly, tan head. Smell: Pleasantly sweetish, whiskey-soaked nose upfront with all it’s accompanying notes. Also dark malts, caramel, chocolate, and roast. Good waft of alcohol as well. Taste: Roasty dark maltiness with full tastes of chocolate sauce and dark caramel. Medium sweetness. Pop of warming alcohol follows fast. Whiskey tastes of oak wood and vanilla. A rebound of roastiness leads us to the somewhat coarsely alcoholic finish, though a hint of chocolate tries to smooth it out. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Mild carbonation. Drinkability: A reasonably competent barrel-aging execution by Flying Dog.

Bottle from mikesgroove. Thanks Mike. Pours a thick dark brown with a fluffy light mocha brown head. It smells really nice. Sweet bourbon, chocolate, coffee and roast. The taste didn’t quite live up to the smell for me but the flavors were there. Chocolate, bourbon, roast, and oak with a nice bit of hippiness in the flavor as well. There was quite a bit of alcohol present in the after taste. Quite dry and decent mouthfeel. A pretty nice barrel aged beer but nothing amazing.

This was boss. Bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar, and worth the wait. Great oakiness, great smoke, on top of what I can only assume is a great porter, though I have never had the original incarnation. A fabulous go-to beer.
