COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve now hit our second stop on our multi-year trip to explore through beer all that is New Jersey. Exit 11. Its confluence of highways ensures that you can get there from here. So we chose a beer that celebrates a confluence of styles. We looked to Germany and its wheat beers, but then we used a classic English ale yeast. A trio of Pacific Northwest hops chime in to creates refreshing American wheat with a bit of a hop bite. Exit 11 is brewed with 50 % Belgian pale malt and 50 % white wheat. It’s hopped with Columbus, Palisade, and Amarillo hops. We then dry hop it with more than a pound per barrel of Amarillo hops for a bouquet reminiscent of tangerines and apricots. A perfect beer to enjoy when you get where you’re going.

On tap at Capones. Poured a medium and cloudy/hazy yellow color wtih a smaller sized white head. Lacing left on the glass. Aromas of wheat, some yeastiness, with lighter citrus and a lighter fruitiness. Tastes of wheat and citrus. A drinkable wheat ale that would be perfect after being outside on a hot summer day.

GABF 2009. Pours clear amber with an average, fizzy white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, meal), average hop (herbs), heavy yeast (horse blanket, barnyard, earth) with notes of pear, date, apple, and honey. Medium bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and an astringent finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Pours golden amber with a generous white head. Smells of sage, pine, some grapefruit, light citrus. Tastes of wheat, peppery, spicy, some resiny hints, bitter, citrussy, and grassy with a nice bitter finish. Very unexpected and as close to an IIPA as a wheat beer can get.

Bottle from Ron’s. Pours chill hazy canary with 3-fingers of white clingy head. Nose is big pineapple, grapefruit, tangerine, floral spices, hopcitrus, and peppery. Tastes hopcitric, with tangerine/grapefruit, florals, yeasty spice, black pepper, pear, and orange zest notes. Very complex, and there is a lot more to this beer than meets the eye (and nose and mouth).

Bottle. Pours a pale copper body with a white head. Dry earth y aromatic character giving way to tangerine and citrus sweetness. Dry and brittle with a wheat y note at first but then drying out to a lightly earth y finish. I’m not sure what to think, its very session-able but mundane at the same time. Oh well, tomorrow is a special day and far from mundane.

Bottle shared by Shawn: Hazy golden hue with small fading head. The aroma has notes of twangy grapefruit, mango, lemongrass, biscuity malts, and wheat husks. The taste is moderately hoppy and twangy with a wheat and yeast driven background. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing, dry finish. A nice hoppy version of an American Wheat but not Gumballhead.

750ml Bottle: Aroma of hops, pollen, light fruit, slight wheat, light tangerine, light pineapple, and a general freshness. Poured yellow/gold in color with a medium-sized white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Lightly hazy. Very sparkling. Okay lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and light to medium bitter. Tastes of hops, pollen, hop-citrus, slight wheat, tangerine, slight grass, and a hint of yeast. Light to medium body. Oily, slick texture. Average carbonation. Lightly sweet, hops, hop-citrus, slight wheat, finish. Too much tangerine.
