COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We’ve now hit our second stop on our multi-year trip to explore through beer all that is New Jersey. Exit 11. Its confluence of highways ensures that you can get there from here. So we chose a beer that celebrates a confluence of styles. We looked to Germany and its wheat beers, but then we used a classic English ale yeast. A trio of Pacific Northwest hops chime in to creates refreshing American wheat with a bit of a hop bite. Exit 11 is brewed with 50 % Belgian pale malt and 50 % white wheat. It’s hopped with Columbus, Palisade, and Amarillo hops. We then dry hop it with more than a pound per barrel of Amarillo hops for a bouquet reminiscent of tangerines and apricots. A perfect beer to enjoy when you get where you’re going.

Situation: recovering my senses after Jerilyn and Rob’s wedding weekend--cheers! Glassware: Koenig wheat... Appearance: Hazy golden body supports an equally hazy, bubbly off-white head-handosme... Aroma: Tremendously aromatic bouquet of alchemized hops, as the bottle proclaims; the clever merge of Northwest and English hops provides a delightfuly softened citrus fruit aroma when wedded with the wheat... Palate: confident, strong yet smooth body in a wheat ale...the wheat softens the approaching crunch that never hits, like a wave that breaks well before shore... Taste: genuine citric crispness that holds its alcohol well within its body--the hops are balanced nicely within a wheat pillow case, but flavor is definitely available on the teeth and tongue... Overall: A birthday gift handpicked by mother-in-law--and what a gift! I applaud Flying Fish for their (somewhat politically maligned) attempt to pay homage to NJ’s distinguishing features...the big bottle affords a big yet respectable taste...if only Jersey traffic were this smooth and enjoyable...

Draft at the Pour House. Pours a hazy golden orange color with a one finger frothy white foam cap that slowly fades into a lasting ring.  Streaks of lacing left behind.   Floral hop aroma with some zesty spice, citrus rind and bready yeast.  Hints of pepper, clove, banana and apple. Medium bodied but on the fuller end with a blast of dry, earthy hops up front that provides bitterness that lingers into a slight dry finish.  Underneath the hops the wheat beer elements are there but they’re overpowered.  Lots of bready yeast with only subtle spice and light fruit.  Faint hints of pepper with a creamy mouthfeel along with some apple and banana.  An interesting idea but too hoppy for my liking making it one dimensional.

Gabf. A touch hazy but quite clear, yellow appearance. Somewhat earthy hoppy, light lemon citrusy aroma. Fairly earthy, organic hoppy, citrusy, wheat malty flavor.

On tap a UJ’s. Pours light golden blond with white head. Aroma of wheat, pine, citrus. Moderately bitter. Basically, the description is accurate, hoppy wheat beer. A bit lighter on the palate than an IPA.

On tap at the Pourhouse. Hazy sunshine yellow with a a medium dirty white head. Restrained citrus aroma with a little wisp of yeast. Mix of herbal, citrus and restrained toasted malt flavors with trailing bubblegum and metallic coppery notes. Interesting, creamy texture and a mildly bitter, mostly dry finish. On OK brew but not entirely focused.

Bottle shared by Eric. Pours a clear yellow color with a medium white head. The aroma is smooth sweet honey and grains. A rich fruity and honey touched malt flavor, grainy. Enjoyable.
