Created by (Casey) Hughes, Exit 13 Chocolate Stout is named for the exit that provides access to Newark International Airport and the Port of Newark. Brewed with a mix of imported and domestic malts, as well as dark wheat, the stout gets floral, fruity and citrus notes from Irish ale yeast and Pacific Northwest hops. In total, Hughes and his team added 580 lbs. of Belcolade Dark Chocolate, then aged the beer with 200 lbs. of cocoa nibs and 12 lbs. of vanilla beans. Hughes recommends it as a dessert beer, and also describes it as perfect for sharing with friends as a winter warmer.

A: The pour is a very dark brown color with a nice tall brown head. S: Plenty of roasted malt and lots of dark chocolate. There’s plenty of a dark fruit aroma to the beer as well. Maybe a touch of vanilla. Not really a super complex nose as that’s really all there is to it. T: Plenty of bitter dark chocolate flavors to be found here. A nice solid roast with a hint of espresso. The dark fruits are there, but a bit more subtle than on the nose. Somewhat bitter overall. M: Medium in body with a fairly high level of carbonation. O: I was expecting a bit more chocolate flavor, but this was good nonetheless.

Capped 750 from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. Pours very dark brown with a creamy/foamy 4 finger dark tan head which does a bit of lacing. It smells like rich chocolate ice cream. Med body. Flavor is slightly bitter chocolate followed by burnt malt. Very smooth. Quite tasty.

Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Nose of roasted chocolate malts, vanilla, freshly brewed coffee and tobacco leaf. Taste is gently roasted chocolate malts, vanilla beans, coffee roast, cocoa and dark wheat. Tasty.

Bottle. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted and produced good lacing. Good roasted coffee malt and dark chocolate aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth sticky texture and flat carbonation. Complex roasted dark chocolate flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet smooth finish of moderate to long duration. Very well balanced complex stout.

Bottle. Pours opaque with an average, frothy brown head, medium-short retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and coffee malt, chocolate, light perfume hops, and faint tropical fruity esters and smoke notes. Flavor is dark malt and smoke with moderate chocolate with light hop bitterness and flavor, medium dark malt bitterness, and a dry finish. Medium-full body, medium warmth and carbonation.

The taste is bitter roasted malts, smoke, chocolate, cocoa, a SweetTart kind of taste, faint vanilla. Bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.
