COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Wild Rice Double IPA. The fourth stop on our multi-year trip to explore New Jersey takes us to one of the most maligned places in the state- the Hackensack Meadowlands. It’s the place usually identified with landfills, pipelines, mob burials (alleged) and sports teams that say they’re from New York. Although no longer home to forests of giant cedars and salt hay marshes teeming with aquatic life, the Meadowlands is still an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we’ve brewed this beer with wild rice. We also used brown and white rice, as well as two malts. Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we’ve added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more-generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine.

Bottled. Nice floral and citrus notes upfront, seems to peter out into strong rice taste after. An interesting idea, but a little disappointing.

Bottle: Cloudy, opaque golden color with some orange-ish outlining shades, capped with a huge, bright white, nimbus head; chunky, sticky, leaving damn good lacing behind. Aroma has notes of peppery hops, mild phenol, slight mint, & faint menthol? Underneath lies softer notes of citrus, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, & sticky pine tree. The front end mint & spiciness blunts the citric & tropical aspects a little too much. Taste is just a touch watery up front... white pepper, vibrant citrus, grapefruit peel, mild mango. Not as peppery spiced as the nose would suggest, but the fruit characteristics are toned down as well. Crisp, dry, mild pine finish. Actually kind of "light" for an 8.2% ABV DIPA. Tasty overall, but I’d like a little more from it... including refinement of the nose.

Bottle from Total Wine in Stuart. Pours a very pale golden orange with a lot of fine carbonation and a white head leaving a bit of lace. Aroma has fresh fruit, citrus, pine and caramel. Nice but slightly understated. Taste is of pine, sweet caramel malts, some fruit and some resin. Not unpleasant, but understated. Medium bodied and a bit sticky. Finishes more to the sweet side of bittersweet, with the caramel and the sweet fruits overwhelming the citrus. Little alcohol noticed. Not bad, just muted in everything - likely the rice presence. Would rather have the pieces unmuted.

Bottle into shaker. Pours a cloudy pale orange color with almost no head. Nose of citrus and floral hops, honey malt, and light cheese. Flavor of cereal malt upfront, pine hop flavor and a nice medium bitter bite for the finish. A little unbalanced, but well crafted and is as advertised. 100th rating.

The New Jersey Meadowlands was the inspiration for this delicious IPA. Not the garbage dump or the rumored grave of Jimmy Hoffa, but the little known wildlife refuge in the shadow of the 4 time Super Bowl champion Giants. A golden IPA with a nice head and nice floral aroma. Very crisp and tasty. Moderate bitterness. Very good IPA.

I went into this with a closed mind of sorts. Rice? That is what I expect from Bud Light. The pale color? I was more put off. Then the aroma, the fuller body, the balanced taste of hops and malt (well rice and malt as fermentables) won me over. Definitely a really good IIPA - give it a try before you misjudge it as well :-)

At Valley Forge Beer Fest 2013. Awesome. The aroma is floral hops, perfume, caramel. The appearance is clear yellow/amber, white head. The flavor is hop forward, perfume like, caramel. The finish is floral, hoppy. Medium in body. Nicely done, very unique. Floral hops seem to dominate here.

Pale golden color. Light head. Nice tropical hop aroma. Medium light bitterness. Average carbonation. Pineapple. Notes. Good. Didn’t notice the rice making much of a difference.

Golden pour with a white head. Aromas of citrus peel and pine hops. Flavor is very dry all around. I can see what they were going for here with the rice to showcase the hop character but it loses a lot of complexity from the lack of malt. It just comes across as very dry with some hoppy notes. Interesting concept though and I’m glad I got to try it. Shoutout to Mikeq215 for hooking me up with a bottle, thanks man!
