Commercial Description:
You are holding the inaugural release in a multi-year brewing experiment-to brew a series of beers as diverse as the great state of New Jersey. Our theme is the state-long artery that connects us. Each beer will focus on the unique aspect of an individual exit, whether an ingredient or event. The journey begins at Exit 4- right up the street from the Flying Fish brewery. As one of the first craft brewers to embrace Belgian-style beers, we’ve chosen to start with a Belgian trippel, finished with plenty of American hops. Note the hazy golden hue and the aroma of citrus with hints of banana and clove. Then taste the Belgian malt flavors and a subdued bitterness in the finish. Bottle conditioned, this beer will develop as it ages. Enjoy.

Lots of spice with first sip. Banana. Gets better as you drink and flavors mellow. Spice lays down and fruit comes out. Very tasty.

Poured from a 750. Murky and dark yellow, nose of gum cloves and bananas. Damn sweet and not very good. Citrus almost saves it, but not quite. Not a fan.

Poured a cloudy blonde color with a big creamy head. Aromas of pepper and citrus, with some banana as it warms. Palate is somewhat fizzy, yet a touch thick at the same time. Tastes of banana and caramel with a little hop note underneath. Banana becomes more apparant as it warms.

From a 750ml into a flying fish snifter. Pours a reddish copper color with a finger or two of head and little to no lacing. Aroma is really, really nice; bubblegum with yeast and alcohol. Mouthfeel is also very good; medium bodied with just the right amount of carbonation. Taste is of banana, clove, alcohol, yeast and above all, hops. Unfortunately, the hops are bitter instead of flavorful. There really isn’t any pine, citrus or floral taste to the hops... just a biting bitterness. That’s the only negative about this beer. If FF could fix this and turn the hops into floral hops, we’d have an amazing beer. Still worth a sip if you can find it.

GABF 2009. Pours clear dark yellow with an average, fizzy white head, somewhat diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, cereal, meal, bread), heavy hop (flowers, herbs, grass, pine, spruce), average yeast (dough, sweat) with notes of pear, pineapple, and honey. Full bodied, stick texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

GABF 2009. Very nice beer, not unlike their Exit 11. Cloudy golden color with a medium-sized, frothy white head and good lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, light fruits (especially banana), spices, and citrusy hops. Flavor is sweet pale malt and maybe a little wheat, yeast, banana, orange, caramel, spices, honey, and citrusy hops. Body is medium and carbonation is high, giving a lively mouthfeel. Very nice overall. Oh yeah, and about the controversy surrounding this beer’s name, let me just say that MADD can shove it.
