Commercial Description:
This strong golden ale showcases a variety of the ingredients and brewing methods that help differentiate Flying Fish beers. The Grand Cru is fermented at a higher temperature than our other beers adding an undercurrent of fruitiness (although there is no fruit in the beer). Very lightly filtered, the Grand Cru exhibits complex mouthfeel, strong malt flavors, a spicy hop presence and a soothing alcohol warmth, followed by a clean, dry finish. Bottle conditioned, it is excellent with food as well as served by itself.

12oz bottle. Hazy golden yellow, white foamy head. Rows of carbonation streaming to the surface, adding to the fluffy white head. Aroma of tangerine & cream, honey, bread (yeast), and a distant scent of banana leaves. Flavor is a foamy mouthful of bread. Light fruit flavors. Orange, honey, spice and herbal finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle, poured to goblet. Pours like a macro (golden/translucent/minimal head). Aroma of belgian funk/yeast, coriander, some nanners. Taste is fairly straight forward for the style. Caramel malts, some funk, spice, slight bready-ness, slight hop bitterness. Somewhat dry finish, slightly sweet. Mouthfeel is standard per the style. To be honest, I wasn’t terribly impressed by this. I’d think of this as something to give a friend that hasn’t had too many Belgian/style beers, as an easy drinking intro, not too strongly flavored.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 1/24/10

Aroma: Aroma of honey, spice/clove, flowers, Belgian yeast, and a bit of banana
Appearance: Slightly cloudy golden-orange color with a thin white head
Flavor: Taste is herbal and yeasty, lots of honey, mild bitterness, good amount of spice
Palate: Very drinkable, refreshing, light bodied beer
Overall Impression: This is a pretty solid beer. Kind of different for a winter beer, certainly doesn’t fall into the category of a warmer. It has a full flavor and a lightness that make it drinkable an enjoyable. A solid beer.

Bottle. Clear golden with thin white head. Aroma is earthy with wheat and cereal, coriander, banana, honey, grass, and some funk. Flavors of cereal, honey, banana, cream, orange, and spice. Slightly acidic finish with some sourdough funk. Medium-full body with full mouthfeel and mild carbonation.

On Tap. Light fruity aroma with a golden body and thin head. Flavor was a bit fruity with malts and hints of spice. Possible coriander, cloves with a dry finish.

Bottle:   Pale golden, moreso on the straw side, moderate foamy white head, spotty lacing, very light carbonation.   Musty aroma, pale floral notes, yeasty, a bit bready.   Much the same on the tongue.   Surprised that this Belgian Ale actually tastes as if was created on the other side of the Atlantic.   Perhaps it is a bit more bready than yeasty, signature American, but its fairly well balanced.   Musty finish, very minor floral notes.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Lingering sweetness.   I was expecting a bit more from a "Grand Cru" but it is fairly decent as is.   Not half bad.

Bottle, thanks to keepersj12. Amber pour with a thin white head. Interesting aroma of yeast, nutmeg, clove and malt. Flavour started rather sweet. Pretty clean sliding down. Some fruit and spice lurking there. Alcohol not especially well masked. Some bitterness towards the finish. Grew on me and not without some charm.
