3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 FlacoAlto (3155) - Tucson, USA - DEC 24, 2006
Pours with only an initially one-and-a-half finger thick, frothy, off white colored head despite the ample carbonation that creates a mad rush of bubbles streaming towards the surface of the beer. The beer is a brilliantly clear, amber tinged, full copper color. The aroma is, of course, hop dominated; both notes of herbaceous pine and sweet citrus are quite noticeable. The citrus notes are dominant, though the herbal character was what I noticed first. Sweet citrus notes of fresh orange zest, ruby-red grapefruit, and lychee lead the citrus charge. There is perhaps a wisp of grain / malt character here; a hint of toasted grain, and some caramelized malt sugars are all that I even get suggestions of in the aroma.
A nice solid bitterness leads up front in my first sip, and continues on through the finish. The bitterness is fairly smooth and I would not necessarily characterize it as biting. Somewhat dry, though there is a nice caramelized character here, the hops lean towards zesty citrus as opposed to the sweet, fleshy fruit notes. The finish has a malt undertone, that mixes with a menthol / pine character and adds a bit of lingering astringency. Medium full on the palate the beer is light enough to be quaffable, but has enough mouthfeel to be just a touch chewy.
This is a nice quaffable beer; it certainly strikes the balance between quaffability and hop character that should define the style. It is not one of the more aggressive versions of the style, but never fear, it is still enjoyable and hoppy enough for all but the seriously hop-deranged.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 maxwelldeux (328) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - JUN 1, 2012
This is just a bit too sweet for an IPA. Cloudy and golden with a moderate head and very light on the palate. But just a tad to sweet that overwhelms the hoppiness.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 scottw86 (908) - Maryland, USA - JUN 1, 2012
Poured a slightly hazy amber-orange color with a large off-white head. Aroma has some citrus with grains. Taste is a bit watery with lots of hay and grain flavors. Some hops with citrus, but not as much as in the aroma. Overall it’s ok, but it’s a little too smooth for an IPA.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 drfabulous (2287) - Lexington, Kentucky, USA - MAY 27, 2012
12 ounce from mixed six pack at Foodery. Orange body. Foamy pour. Not much flavor, however. IPA? Who knows how fresh the bottle is, but not tasty.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 RedSox2004 (804) - Pacific Palisades, California, USA - MAY 21, 2012
Hazy orange color with a modest head, ok retention and nice lace. Subtle grassy hops aroma with a touch of pineapple and grapefruit. Slight hops bitterness balanced with bready malt sweetness. Light to medium body, lots of carbonation, a bit harsh on the tongue, and a crisp finish. A good example of the difference between an East Coast IPA and a West Coast IPA. Perhaps my tongue is numb.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 bytemesis (156) - Sunnyvale, California, USA - MAY 15, 2012
Bottle. Pours clear amber with a medium off-white head that dissipates quickly with some lacing. Aroma is of grapefruit, but fades rapidly after opening. Taste is mild, with a mix of citrus and floral hops and some sweet caramel malt backing. Finish is moderately bitter and clean. Surprisingly light for its type, and a little bland for my personal preference.

Draft at the Khyber. Hazy dark honey pour. Citrus pith bitterness throughout but a honey sweeness lingers after. Nice palate. Decent.

On tap, Dinosaur BBQ, Newark NJ. Clean lines. Pours golden with a reddish hue; nice head retention. Limited hop aroma. Attack is smooth, almost too smooth for a standard IPA, with a balanced middle and relatively clean finish with just a bit of lingering hops. Solid offering, simple IPA.
