This robust dark brew has been created in conjunction with Crescent Moon to coffee to come up with a special five bean blend to bring out the depth of the beer. Originally produced to celebrate our 10th anniversary, this has now become our late-winter seasonal. Note the aromas of toffee, licorice and coffee roastiness. Then take a sip–there’s a malty richness on the palate followed by chocolate, coffee, spices and perhaps even some licorice character from the Mount Rainier hops. The beer finishes with a subtle black cherry/berry character from rare Ethiopian Sidamo beans. Oh yeah, it also packs a royal kick at 8% alcohol.

Coffee: Blend of five Estate coffees locally roasted

Malts: Two Row Pale, Munich, Chocolate, Medium Crystal and Cara Malts.
Hops: Magnum and Mount Rainier
Yeast: English Ale
Original Gravity: 18 Plato

Almost black with a crema brown head that fades like that of an actual espresso. Nice malty aroma with spicy floral notes to it. Definite chocolate taste is rich and fades like sweet roasty goodness. $2.50/12oz

12oz. bottle. Dark brown color with a small tan head. Nice coffee aroma with some roasted malt notes, chocolate and cola. Flavor starts off mildly sweet, with the coffee and dark chocolate coming through. Turns somewhat bitter, with the dark roasted malts and hops making an appearance. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel on the finish, with the carbonation level fairly low. Alcohol barely shows it’s head. I enjoyed this beer quite a bit.

12oz bottle shared courtesy of Zrrbrrt. Poured a deep brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, some dark fruits, and light coffee/ latte. Almost reminded me of a baltic porter. Tastes of roast, vanilla and light coffee. I love coffee beers and anything with the words ’Imperial Espresso’ in the title gets me excited to try, but I have to admit, I was let down. To me Imperial Espresso should be all about the coffee and I found the coffee aspect to be lacking (that being said, this was still a solid beer).

Thanks to Josh. Pours a deep brown with some amberwhen held to the light with a smaller light tan head. Aroma of coffee grinds, sweet malts, chocolate, some vanilla. Flavor of coffee, molasses, sweet malts, hot fudge and cocoa.

Bottle. Dark brown with small lacing head. Chocolate, coco, vanilla, mollases, and nutty flavors thru out. Smooth and sweet with creamy mouthful. Medium body. The best beer Flying Fish has made to date.

Pours a deep brownish/black supporting a silky light khaki head with fair retention. Thin lacing coats the glass most of the way down. Aroma of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, nuts, caramel and vanilla bean. Flavor of rich roasted malt, cocoa, coffee and a suggestion of dried dark fruits. Creamy texture with just the right amount of subtle carbonation and a consistently smooth, long and mildly sweet finish. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. This is, by far, the best brew these guys have ever cooked up. Congrats on their 10th anniversary and on their manor of celebrating!

Bottle. Dark brown, with a tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and has a lingering sweetness, but it’s not too sweet. A solid porter, and the best beer Flying Fish has made to date.

UPDATED: SEP 25, 2008 Deep brown, almost opaque with a small head. Aroma is rich, creamy coffee and chocolate. Taste is incredibly sweet coffee and roasted chocolate malts. Might be a little sweet for some, but I think it works with this recipe. Creamy texture. Full body. Alcohol is well hidden. Long, sweet finish. I think I just found a new trade bonus beer.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2007 Pours a deep Mahoganny color with a thin head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is powerful and practically jumps out of the glass at you. There are notes of mainly chocolate, coffee (espresso), and maple sugar. Immediately upon pouring and at cold, it had a scent of dates and apricots, but they soon faded as the beer warmed up to the appropriate temperature. The flavor is full of rich slightly roasty malts with some milk chocolate flavors and then WHAM, you get hit with this incredibly long finish that is rich with dark, sweet coffee. THe mouthfeel is velvety. There is a richness on the palate that is incredibly well balanced in that it was silky smooth, but also finishes quickly and crisp. Delicious beer. Too bad this probably won’t be around long. I would love to cellar about 10 cases.

12 oz bottle into snifter glass..pours a dark brown color...looks like coffee actually...sweet malted aroma smooth mouth feel..distinct mocha and cocoa as it sits, a banana characteristic is also apparent.... not overpowering with espresso flavor very minimal actually...a slight dryness to the finish with a bit of stickiness as well
