mds (2111), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 16, 2008 Bottle. Pours a mahogany-copper body with a creamy tan head. Aroma is chocolatey with light espresso, toffee, alcohol, and rye bread.
Fairly thin body overall with some chocolatey sweetness and prominent alcohol notes. Some toast and coffee bean flavours as well.
Sammy (3020), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 13, 2008 Bottle broken up from six-pack, courtesy of State Line Liquor. A complex beer, though criticism its too much on the sweet side. Pours a coffeeish dark, with a white head a little bubbly. The taste, sourish, a bit dry, and a malt backbone. A little lace starts to show, some expresso flavouring. Medium mouthfeel, it is suitably carbonaation and gives some smooth mouthfeel. There is brown sugar. It is a dry sout with much too high on the sweetness scale, good for some.
NomDeBeer (128), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Aug 9, 2008 Pours dark brown with a small tan head that receeds quickly. Faint alcohol warmth to go with notes of chocolate, caramel, and roasted malts. Good coffee flavor though not as much as I was looking for. Decent mouth feel but a bit thin for an imperial anything. Solid beer and very drinkable. hellbilly (837), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jul 29, 2008 bottle by way of bgburdman9... pours a very dark reddish brown with a half inch of tan head. distinct aroma of chocolate malt powder along with dark roast, black raisins, molasses and faint coffee. smells very baltic? tastes a lot like it smells... light amounts of vanilla, roast, prunes/black raisins and molasses. dry lightly bitter finish with lingering coffee in the aftertaste. (only) a medium body but quite a smooth mouth feel. imperial in abv% only but still quite tasty. sadly the coffee is not as impressive as i was hoping for but it is still a solid brew... coldbrewky (484), Saugerties, New York, USA Jul 26, 2008 Updated: Jul 28, 2008Bottle in trade with Funknmilla. Pours a deep murky brown with no head. This is one of the few imperfections. If it would have looked nicer in the glass....... Nose is of sweet toffee, caramel and very ripe apricots. Not unpleasant at all. Full creamy body of chocolate malts with touches of black patent and even less coffee. CONGRADULATIONS!!! Just how I envison the use of coffee in brewing (see prior rants on coffee). My cat seems to enjoy this one to, as he keeps sniffing at the glass and sticking his paw in it and greedily likcking it clean.(3X) Body is surprisingly short for such a tasty package. A thin tone of hop tang for finish and aftertaste puts a smile on ones face. Thanks again Ms. Funk! brewandbbq (201), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jul 15, 2008 Pours dark brown, almost opaque, with a one inch head of tan froth.
Retention lasts several minutes, and the head subsides to a partial skim coat with some errant lacework.
Aromatics lead off with chocolate, vanilla, espresso, and dark caramel.
Some nougat and sweetish malt pulls through.
On the thicker side of medium bodied and slightly creamy. Lightish carbonation and a bit chewy.
The pallet starts with caramel-laced cocoa, mild espresso notes, and more vanilla.
Alcohol starts to warm and some sweet toffee arises.
Finishes with lingering caramel, vanilla, and chocolate. Slightly nutty.
Pretty tasty, but somewhat underwhelming. I was expecting more of everything in this one.
The espresso character is especially low as well as the "Imperial" profile. It’s also a bit thin.
