3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 gripweed57 (26) - Hamilton Square, USA - OCT 6, 2007
Deep amber, orange color. Small white head. Mild toasted malt nose with a floral hop balance. Sweet caramel malt flavor upfront with notes of dried fruit and brown sugar. Hops come through in the finish. Smooth and flavorful, you can drink several of these in one session. Nicely done.
2.4 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20 SanfordBrewer (1261) - Sanford, Florida, USA - FEB 16, 2012
Appearance is translucent copper with a thin beige head, slightly chewy medium body, and medium carbonation.
Aroma is mostly harsh thin hops at first, but some pale malt sweetness and dark malt notes emerge as it warms, as well as a bit of alcohol, and fruity esters sort of like cooked whole fresh peaches.
Flavor has lots of fruity ale esters, the nice bready qualities of Vienna and Munich malts, and a bit of citrusy hop character.
Overall, a pretty good beer once the initial aromas dissipate, and has a fairly authentic German character, though more Altbier than Octoberfest, mainly due to the abundant yeast esters.
2.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20 Ibrew2or3 (4985) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - FEB 1, 2012
12oz bottle with label stating German Style Ale printed on it pours clear gold with near white head. The aroma offers up esters and apple and a bit of cherry hard candy covered over by yeasty spices. The taste is insanely thin and somewhat on the tart side with a mix of red apples and tart green apples followed by, despite what the label states, yeasty lager like notes and muted possibly floral hops. Meh. (holy . . . there’s an oaked iced version of this!!)
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 timfoolery (661) - California, USA - JAN 16, 2012
Bottle from Total Wine in Roseville. Very drinkable and smooth offering from FFish. This brew had a nice breadth and finish of pure maltiness, that was far from thin and also keeps to the genre rather perfectly. Very good beer.

12 ounce bottle that pours a light copper color, aroma of malt, caramel, and light hops. Extremly easy drinker due to the caramel and malt flavors.

Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours orange amber with a slight whiteish head. Aroma is mildly grassy hop. Med body. Flavor is a little grapey/sweety caramel with some balancing herby/grassy hop. A flavor I’ve never encountered in a beer. Drinks good.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Heathen (1242) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - NOV 3, 2011
THOUGHTS: Malty with just enough hops to balance things out. Avoided this for years, but it’s not bad at all.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a light copper with an average, off-white head that mostly diminished and left good lacing. The aroma had moderate to heavy dark bread, grain, toasted malt and caramel; moderate herbal and grassy hops; and a little fruitiness, too. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was moderately sweet and light to moderately bitter with an average to long duration. There was caramel, toasted malts, burnt caramel, dark bread, some grassy and herbal hops, and a little metallic hops. The medium body was a little syrupy and then dry with fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic and mostly dry finish.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 DiarmaidBHK (1528) - Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 22, 2011
Bottle from Total wine Tucson. Pours brown with a thin head that disappears quickly. Faint hint of malt on the nose. a bit of sweetness on the tongue. This tastes more like a Marzen that lacks ambition. It’s easy to drink but then again so is water.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 JDBaker11058 (680) - Maryland, USA - OCT 21, 2011
Appearance: amber-orange, lightly opaque, one-finger off-white head slowly shrinking to a thick collar, decent lacing. Aroma: toasty brown bread, caramel malts, hint of copper tea-kettle. Taste: caramel, toast, brown sugar, a surprising fruitiness (apricots & cherries). Finish: smooth, a little syrupy, with sweet caramel and fruits giving way to a bit of toast and grass. Notes: There is no way this is an alt, right? I can’t be that crazy. This is clearly an Oktoberfest/Marzen, and it was one of the more complex and serious of the American Oktoberfest beers I’ ve had this season. I liked the bit of fruitiness that was in there, and the appearance and aroma were welcoming. Soft palate, very drinkable.
