COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deep mahogany coloured ale with rich malt characters & hints of toffee. The raisiny, blackcurrant dryness in the finish is typical in beers made with dark malts & high alcohol content. English grown Golding’s hops lend a distinctly floral hop flavour in the background.

Draught at the brewpub. A cloudy dark brown with a green-tinged head (?). Roasted malt on the nose, some coffee. Sweet roasted malt on the palate, the sweetness increasing in the swallow. Moderately smooth.

Bottle. Clear, dark coppery brown pour with a small foamy tan head that lasts a little while. Aroma is slightly sweet with notes of chocolate, caramel, dates, prunes and hints of coffee and grass. Flavour is almost identical to the aroma but the grassy hops come through a little more and the sweetness is toned down in favour of some mild roastiness and bitterness. Mouthfeel is moderately thick and creamy with low carbonation and a medium to short roasty, bittersweet finish. A little bit porterish, this is a nice, easy drinking dark ale.

Ungstrup (23960) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 8, 2010
Bottled. An unclear brown beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, and prunes as well as hints of smoke. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, metal, caramel, and over rope fruits, leading to a dry and bitter finish - which finishes the beer off in a boring way.

Bottle. Clear dark red/ brown with a beige head. Rich aroma of dark and dried fruits, toffee, flowers, chocolate. Taste is also very rich with berries, currants, blackcurrants and toffee. Drying finish has floral hops but no overt bitterness. I wished for either more complex flavours or something to lighten its touch.

Not bad if a bit simple and just a touch clumsy. Good lift of hops on the nose although as expected this beer is about malts, chocolate and toffee. Mostly delivers on this front however there is a boozy cola note that seems a little of of place for the style. Too much fizz as well makes it a little tough for the flavours to poke through.
