Bottle at Flying Monkey Tasting 1.29.07 - Thanks for having us Robert! Pour is almost black, twinge of dark brown. Nice full deep tan head. Taste is all roast, burnt sugar and coffee. Somewhere between a stout and a porter, very nice.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 tomciccateri (737) - Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA - JAN 20, 2007
From a 12-ounce twist-off bottle. Pours an opaque balck color with a slight tan lace. Big toffee aroma followed by a medium body and dry dark malt flavor. Late coffee character and slight hops hit on the tongue. Reasonably creamy mouthfeel. Clean finish. Not bad.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 GG (1980) - NorCal, California, USA - JAN 20, 2007
NorCal tasting Jan 07 - Received in a trade with Dansting. Before we popped the bottle, we all had a good laugh at the bottle’s label. Interesting stuff! The pour was a deep, deep brown practically black head with a beige head. Aroma was strong on the coffee side, some toffee but mostly coffee. Mouthfeel was creamy with a chewy mouthfeel. Flavors were mostly coffee as well with a little more toffee character than the nose. Definitely a nice beer.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 heemer77 (4796) - Urbandale, Iowa, USA - DEC 28, 2006
From a bottle purchased at Lukas Liquor in KC. The body is black with a light brown and peach colored head. The aorma is roasted with some coffee and dark chocolate. There is also some fresh green peas. The taste has some day old coffee and a little bit of green beans. There is a hitn of cocoa in the finish. A decent stout.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 csbosox (1191) - Prairie Village, Kansas, USA - DEC 14, 2006
12oz bottle, part of a pick a six at Lukas. Dark reddish brown color nearly black. Aroma is roast, coffee, lactose, and a touch of bittersweet chocolate. Body is thin. Taste is roasty and coffeelike. The initial sweetness is met by the bitterness of the dark grains. Not too bad, easy to drink for sure. I would say this is a dry stout.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 mreusch (851) - Olathe, Kansas, USA - DEC 3, 2006
Out of retirement for 2006, bottle, pours nice thicker dark black with a slight tan head that dissipates, some lacing. Nice subtle aroma of freshly roasted/toasted malts, some molasses. A very mild and restrained taste with more roasted malts and coffee; a higher level of carbonation than expected. More like a porter than a stout, but overall a mild and well balanced beer.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 PhillyBeer2112 (2361) - Oviedo, Florida, USA - AUG 7, 2001
UPDATED: MAR 20, 2007 Updated for the new release: This stuff is dark - I mean black, its really dark! Three finger, not four, head! But what a head, almost brown in color, foamy and pitted. Roast and coffee in the nose, a touch of brown sugar, there also might be some citric hops here. Light on the palate, with a roasted note, and paradoxically smooth from the big malt presence and biting from the fizzy carbonation, then a touch of twang. Finish is pretty hoppy, probably citric. This seems to match my original (below) rating of this beer from its previous incarnation, but it feels a touch less complex. It still seems like it could make a good stout float. I’m keeping the rating at 4, this is the kind of stout that suits me fine.
Original beer for historical purposes: Nice deep black color and medium head. Medium but smooth carbonation and body.
Rich coffeeish flavors. Malty and rich - a very good stout. I plan to try this with vanilla ice cream - it was a flavor match that just screamed out at me as I drank it.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20 VENOM (941) - Connecticut, USA - JUL 24, 2001
Flat and barely carbonated ( long travel and an outdated best before date would contribute to this) but with a very nice deeply roasted espresso flavor with huge amounts cocoa and oaty sweetness. Flavors held up well until the end despite the flatness. A brew I’d definately try again.
