UPDATED: JUN 1, 2011 2011-05-29. Very dark brown black body with a modest tan head. 3+ Sweet aroma of cocoa and Hershey syrup over sweet dark malt. 7+ Flavour is similar with notes of cocoa and chocolate, and hints of gingerbread cake or Christmas pudding. Light roasty notes, nice hop character in the finish. Medium bodied palate. Quite nice, better suited to sipping by the fireplace in winter than a humid summer patio but nice either way. 7/4/7/4/14+ - 3.6 On tap as 38 Birthday Cake at Brewers Market event, Toronto
2010-12-10. Aroma of Ovaltine at first, gets quite fruity with mild sweet malt character as it warms up. 7+ Flavour is similar, sweet Ovaltine up front, very light spice, maybe? Pleasant hoppy English ale like profile in the background. 7+ Smooth average plus bodied palate. 3+ Enjoyable, it gains a lot of nuance as it warms up. 7/4/7/3/15 - 3.6 Tap at Volo as Christmas Cake, Toronto

Draught at Volo. Pours a very deep ruby, almost black, with a large lasting frothy tan head. Aroma of marshmallows, lots of cocoa, candy, berries and maybe some coconut -- I really like it, it’s interesting and different. Chocolaty flavour, lightly roasted, along with some light berry tartness. Average dry, bitter finish. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. Unique and enjoyable -- it’s too sweet for multiple pints but if you have just one it’s a nice treat.

Cask at C’est What, under the name Chocolate Cake - came a deep, dark brown, might as well say black, with a healthy, frothy, whipped beige head. Aroma amazing - cocoa, vanilla, roasted malts and big green hops. Flavour similar, though the sweetness dominates, and the hops take a back seat. There is a lingering bitter finish, either from the chocolate or the hops, I couldn’t tell. Creamy mouthfeel, big chocolate flavour, can’t believe this is only 4.2%!?! Really awesome beer, though it’d be tough to drink more than a pint because of the sweetness, which by the end was becoming a bit cloying. Another experimental winner from the Peter and the FM crew. Bravo.

On Cask at C’est What? It’s called "chocolate cake" on the cask menu. I hope this is right. Appearance: pitch black, oily with a lightly frothy tan head. Aroma: slight chocolate, mocha, cream, malt. Nice. Flavour: wow a huge chocolate bite, huge! Lots of cocoa, some berries too, raspberry? A chocolate lovers dream, quite a lot of malt & leather, wood in there also. Long bitter chocolate finish. Very nice.

Draught at Chancey Smith’s- Very deep motor oil brown with a creamy mocha head. Nice lace too. Very inviting nose of black forest cake with some black coffee as well. Not as sweet as I thought it would be. Mostly flavours of black coffee. It has a marked bitterness with an almost chalky dryness. Finish is dry and very creamy with a quick finish. Good stuff overall.
