COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Bottle from LCBO in Ottawa, pours a rich dark amber with a little white head. The aroma was hoppy and sweet, some molasses. Taste a bitterness with hops, some grapefruit and gentle sweet malts. Somewhat forceful but I thought it balanced and a nice ale.

jksipa (273) - Newmarket, Ontario, CANADA - SEP 5, 2013
Bottle from the Beer Store. Pours a slight hazy amber with a small off white head. Nose is mostly caramel and citrus. Lightly hopped for a low level of bitterness. More grassy than anything. Light to medium body that is quite drinkable. A pale ale designed not to offend anyone.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2013 355ml bottle from The LCBO. Pours with a large head that dissipated quickly, but did have a bit of lacing. Taste was smooth with only a hint of bitter hops. A good starter Pale Ale.

Obefintlig doft men då är den också serverad i ett okupat glas. Delar en flarra med Johan på pipes. Lättdrucken och nästan läskande

355ml bottle. Pours a clear amber with a creamy, half-finger, off-white head that thins to a ring and film. Mild lacing clings to the glass. Aroma is hoppy with a hint of bread and citrus. Taste is a bit bitter with a short, slightly dry aftertaste. Low to medium body and carbonation. A touch watery in the mouth but still plenty of texture to hang on to. Not a bad offering. I think it does what (I think) It is meant to do. Bridge the gap between Well Crafted Beer and Mass Produced Swill in an attempt to reach a broader audience. Good job.

I like this beer. May not be as hoppy as most ipa I drink but overall this is a good beer and definatly worth a try. Appearance is a nice dark haze. Taste is well balanced with both a nice malt background with hints of nuts and Caramel and a good hop finish. Will definatly enjoy again.
