Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Finally getting around to rating this. Poured into a shaker, deep orange in colour with a bright head that lasts and gives good lacing. Aromas of citrus, bitter hops and a slight maltiness. Taste is bitter-sweet, leaning strongly to the bitter side. Finishes clean and crisp with just enough lingering bitterness. This is a constant in my beer fridge, I could drink this all day long. Really good, emminently sessionable beer.

355ml bottle from Saveur-Biere

Pours dark reddish orange with a small white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, toffee, hints of citrus, floral hops and grass. Taste is malty, crisp and earthy with some grass and floral notes. Finish is malty, bitter and earthy with some hints of floral notes. Decent, but doesn’t feel very fresh.

Bottle at Salt Lick, Hualien, Taiwan. Dark amber, medium head. Citrus caramel nose, followed by rye spiciness. Lightish body, but quite nice.

Bottle. Copper amber clear. Caramels, citrus, some peachyness on nose. Med light bodied, bit light on the malts. Hoppy though, bitter with a slight piney finish. Ok drink. Feels like a honest baseline US ipa/pale ale.

Flaska. Härliga toner av fotbira o lagård. Smaken något tunn med en bra balanserad efterbeska. En hyfsad pale ale.

It’s a fine lil’ brew this one is. Nothing about this screams "totally awesome" but it is tasty and sessionable as heck. Fruity citrus hops and strong caramel comprise the scent of this ruddy-honey fella. A nice lacer, too. Taste is bittersweet, leaning more to the bitter side of things but leaving a lingering sweet, fruity flavour behind. Mid-low carbonation and medium body round out this good time.

Fiche technique Style: Pale Ale Format: 355 ml Taux d?alcool : 5%
