COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Excellent beer. Great aroma, darkish colour, tasted quite hoppy though not as much so as a Tankhouse, maybe a little citrus and well rounded malts. Its the kind of nice hoppy beer you could drink more than oe of easily. Not just a sipper. I’m liking this brewery as I also like the Robert Simpson Confederation Amber.

Bottle at Salt Lick, Hualien, Taiwan. Dark amber, medium head. Citrus caramel nose, followed by rye spiciness. Lightish body, but quite nice.

Bottle. Copper amber clear. Caramels, citrus, some peachyness on nose. Med light bodied, bit light on the malts. Hoppy though, bitter with a slight piney finish. Ok drink. Feels like a honest baseline US ipa/pale ale.

Flaska. Härliga toner av fotbira o lagård. Smaken något tunn med en bra balanserad efterbeska. En hyfsad pale ale.

355ml bottle from the LCBO. Grassy caramel aroma overtop a amber body with a huge frothy off white head. Wet cardboard flavors on the palate. Long finish, astringent not very balanced.

Clear amber colour, white head. Aroma of malts, hops, apricot, spicy herbal hops, hint of citrus. Malty flavour, honey, hops and citrus. Malty finish, honey, hops, apricot, bit bitter. Nice.

It’s a fine lil’ brew this one is. Nothing about this screams "totally awesome" but it is tasty and sessionable as heck. Fruity citrus hops and strong caramel comprise the scent of this ruddy-honey fella. A nice lacer, too. Taste is bittersweet, leaning more to the bitter side of things but leaving a lingering sweet, fruity flavour behind. Mid-low carbonation and medium body round out this good time.

Fiche technique Style: Pale Ale Format: 355 ml Taux d?alcool : 5%

Bottle 355 ml at Selmas, Ludvika, on September 24, 2014.
Clear brown color, small white head. Malty, floral taste. A bit toasty caramel aftertaste, also bitter. Fizzy mouthfeel, low bitterness. Sweet, malty, caramel scent.

Very good example of a pale ale doing it right. Poured a dark amber with a massive off white head. Aroma was of light pine, floral hops, and hints of mustiness. Tasted of caramel, toffee, pine, and light resin. Had low bitterness with a smooth medium body. I found this to be more malty than hoppy, but that is just want I needed.
