Heeding a chorus of voices crying for a dark roasty thing with lots of west coast hops and a higher ABV, we summoned Netherworld from the chaotic flipside of the brewhouse where hybrid is the norm and nothing is ordinary. Hovering just this side of evil, in the right hands, our «Cascadian Dark Ale» is bizarrely nice with its own entrancing mojo. However, watch out for those who refuse to see the darkness.

Pours a pitch black with a modest brown head and some lacing. Nice! Aroma of blackcurrants and licorice. Strong licorice taste, spicy hops, roasted malt. Moderately thick body with nice carbonation. Very flavourful CDA - unique!

12 oz bottle from the LCBO, served in a tulip. Pours hazy mahogany with a moderate tan head. The head fades slowly, leaving behind a moderate amount of fine lace. On the nose, there are notes of pine, citrus, chocolate, caramel, herbs and earth. The flavour is balanced between moderately sweet toasted malts, with nuts, chocolate and molasses, and a moderate piney bitterness from the hops. The finish is long and balanced, with pine, citrus and chocolate notes. Overall, this is a nice black IPA. it is less intrusive than other examples and has a nice chocolate bias. 2011-12-07

Pours clear and dark with white foamy head. Very little aroma. Taste is very little bitter but mostly sweet with the hops and sharp aftertaste.

355ml bottle, brown color, with some ruby highlights, and a beige pillowy head, toasted, biscuity, caramel, roasted malt, fruity, faintfloral hop nose, with some light leafy, grassy hoppy accents, and with some mild toffee, chocolatey, cookie dough notes, within a mity leaf aroma follows through on a medium- bodied palate with mild sweet toasted, caramelized, biscuity, roasted malt, flowery zesty lime peel, leafy, grassy, cedary hop bitter character, with some lemon, grapefruit rind undertones, leading towards a soft roasty maltiness, leafy, grassy, cedary hop bitterness finish.

Five out of five on appearance, talk about beautiful. Pours black with a pillowy tan head. Aroma is moderately strong and nice, slightly piney with a bit of a roasted malt scent. The taste is fairly good, but there is something wrong with this beer. It’s not bad, but it’s failing somewhere. The body is too thin and the flavours just sorta spill over your tongue haphazardly. Aftertaste is so "roasted" that it is burnt. It’s an okay beer with some definite issues it needs to work out. Needs to be a little thicker to accommodate the huge taste and to mellow out the aftertaste.

Very dark almost black pour. Holding it up to the light I do see some redness. Head was light and faded quick. Hoppy slightly raisony scent. Complex thick and sweet fading to bitter mouth. A bit sticky. Some malts and really dark bitter chocolate. Good to see Flying Monkey knows how to make more then Pale Ales. Rich and enjoyable. I wouldn’t want to drink a bunch of these in a row but I’m definitely enjoying the one I have.

pours a medium brown color with strong hop aroma. flavours of grapefruit and possibly bubblegum. When tasting this, I didn’t realize it was an IPA, so was a bit surprised at the strong hop bitterness. The medium body and use of a bit of dark malt makes this a rather enjoyable change from the typical IPA.

Pours almost black with a creamy brown head that dissipates quickly. Aroma consists of strong chocolate, sweet coffee and deeply roasted malts. Bitter and sour tastes hit the tongue immediately. Bitterness gives way to sweet malt flavor, but sourness remains through the otherwise abrupt finish. Just ’okay’.

355ml bottle. Pours dark, dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is hop heavy, citrus, dark malts, molasses, biscuit, faint coffee, and dried fruits. Taste is surprisingly big on coffee notes, molasses, dark malts, with a healthy hit of hops. Think hopped up porter. It seems I waited too long to try this guy out. It’s pretty great. Another fine beer from Flying Monkeys.

UPDATED: NOV 1, 2011 Bottle. The first Black IPA I’ve tried. Very dark black colour with off white head. Faint aroma, a little hoppy. Taste is bitter and roasty stout tasting. Decent. (500th rating)
