Heeding a chorus of voices crying for a dark roasty thing with lots of west coast hops and a higher ABV, we summoned Netherworld from the chaotic flipside of the brewhouse where hybrid is the norm and nothing is ordinary. Hovering just this side of evil, in the right hands, our «Cascadian Dark Ale» is bizarrely nice with its own entrancing mojo. However, watch out for those who refuse to see the darkness.

Nice and dark roasty notes offered in this black IPA make it a good example of an american black ipa.

It’s a dandy looking beer, nice and dark with a moderate to low tan head. Wow, aroma is initially just loads of resiny, citrusy hops, but if you stick with it, you start to get the roasty malt as well. Really interesting. Toasted cereal in there as well. And what is going on in the taste? Bitter, yep. Finishes out with more malt than hop, though and leaves you wanting another sip to figure out what you’ve been tasting. Could use a bit more lingering aftertaste. And it would perhaps be just a little less dry, to my taste anyway. Overall, interesting beer.

355mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks Mike), pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a small tan / light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts and citrus hops upfront - pretty standard for a black IPA. Flavour is also fairly typical, but well-executed, for a black IPA, with roasted malt upfront, followed by dry hoppy bittering which lingers on the finish. Nothing special about this, but it does what it does very competently. Solid stuff.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a rich black with a good three-finger beige head. Aroma is dominated by deeply roasted malts and citrusy hops. Taste is a very nice balance of flora, aromatic hoppy flavours and roasted malt with some notes are dark coffee and pure cocao. An excellent bitter finish and another great beer from Flying Monkeys.

Bottle: Poured a dark almost black brown with a off white to light tan head. Aroma is citrus and roasted malt. The taste hits you head on with citrus hops and yet doesn’t overwhelm the nice roasted sweet malt that balances this beer perfectly.

On tap at Brothers Beer Bistro (Ottawa, ON). Black body with a thin off-white creamy head. Malty/hoppy aroma with grainy and roasty hints. Its well balanced malty/hoppy taste carries roasted coffee notes and ends with a decent bitter/roasty finish.
