4.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 sunyjim (9) - London, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 1, 2011 does not count
I’ve been eager to try a Black IPA since I heard about them in a brew magazine. Exactly as I’d hoped. WOW citrus hops bold and out there at the front, the dark chocolaty beer flavour warming the middle, and a finish of drying hops on the tongue. It is a pretty cutting edge beer for Ontario Craft breweries, and I will seek out more of this in the future.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 whitecap (220) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - OCT 1, 2011
Pours black with a thin beige head out of a 341ml bottle from the LCBO. dark and chocolate malts. somewhat hoppy but not overwhelming. Not very bitter. Not much to compare this too but it’s pretty awesome. Either a great beer or I really enjoy this style.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 WheatKing (182) - Victoria, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 25, 2012
Surprised Netherworld isn’t rated higher... this beer strikes a great balance. Black IPAs can often feel unbalanced, with a little too much black bitterness. This one is just a nice strong hop content in the front with a richness in the back. I can smell the douglas firs while drinking this. Head and lacing are great. This is how great beers are made. Highly recommended.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 yesyouam (976) - Fairport, New York, USA - APR 5, 2011
Flying Monkeys Netherworld CDA is a very dim reddish brown beer with a cappuccino colored head that’s foamy and bubbly. It leaves excellent lace on the glass. It has a heavy citrus aroma with a good dose of dark roast coffee. It’s medium-by-light bodied, foamy and smooth. The crunchy, astringent finish leaves the mouth dry. The flavor is a good dose of citrus bitterness. Dark, roasted tones rumble underneath. Bitter grapefruit and tangerine last well after the swallow. This is a bold and flavorful beer that’s fun to drink, but too tongue crushing to be a session ale.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Strangebrewer (523) - Chatham, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 5, 2011
bottle. Poured opaque dark ruby with a creamy beige head. A super hoppy aroma. Full flavoured hoppy brew. Roasty caramel malts, sweet dark fruit, grapefruit citrus notes. Medium-high bitterness start to finish. My first black IPA and I’m blown away.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 czar (1211) - Québec, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 9, 2010
Love the style. Pours (a little pale) brown with a medium head. Aroma is filled with Cascade hops, floral, citrusy. Light to medium body - Was hoping a fuller body for a BIPA. Very good beer!
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 rejtable (485) - Ontario, CANADA - FEB 11, 2011
I love hoppy dark beers, and this one is fabulous. Would buy again in a second.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 FlashParker (85) - Ontario, CANADA - JAN 18, 2011
Very dark pour. Beige head. Great hop aroma. Citrus, pine, mild smoke. Great drinking beer, if a little surprising. Intense hop flavour gives way to a roasted core, hints of lemon and other fruits. A real surprise, kick in the pants kind of beer at first but otherwise totally brilliant. Smooth back end, a "can’t believe I just had three of those" type of beer.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 pudds (28) - Brandon, Manitoba, CANADA - FEB 1, 2012
Pours a beautiful black with a thick foamy head. Smells wonderfully hoppy with a blend of malts and citrus. Initial taste is roasted malts followed by hop bitterness. Leaves a lasting coffee taste on the tongue. Light carbonation with a small amount of lacing on the glass. Excellent.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Tiger_08 (65) - Sarnia, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 9, 2012
May 9 2012. Bottle pours dark brown/black, 1 to 2 inches of fluffy off-white head. Head fades but lasts a while with good lacing. Citrus hops and grapefruit aroma with strong floral and pine. Flavour is grapefruit up front, twist of pine, roasted malt. Medium body and carbonation. Strong hops on palate, followed by sweet citrus and pine then long bitter finish. Not too strong and well balanced. A lot more going on than regular IPA gives it more depth. A great bold brew.
