COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Holy Hop, Batman, this beer has aroma." Hops are casted nine different times, it’s a breath-deep-and-shudder-with-pleasure kind of scent that’s all from the Citra hops. With a high alpha acid of 11%, Citra has a cacauphony of flavours and aromas --Citrus, passion fruit, grapefruit, lime, melon, lychee fruit, pineapple, mango, and papaya – and dominates this beer.

Smashbombs olfactory tropical explosion shockwaves your face every time you lift the meringue foam towards you. It’s like the ecru-coloured top of a beer pie before it gives up and grips the glass. You can see the Victory malt’s signature in the amber lights in what is primarily a deep golden beer. And, yes, don’t be fooled --there’s malt going on here, too, as you’ll see in the firey body of this ale that makes Smashbomb Atomic look like it radiates its own energy.

With the first taste, Smashbomb’s 70 IBUs are pronounced. This brew is a little bitter, but bitter like a grapefruit with three tablespoons of sugar on top. It’s also incredibly drinkable. The oddity that’ll keep you tipping the glass is that as this citrus peel front subsides, you actually gleen the sweet flavours of the Victory and Crystal malts. Then, as the bread-puddin’ bicuity sweetness of the malts are chased by the dry, tropical flavour of Citra and the fruit punch bouquet is all in your face with each sip, it’s all is so damn intriguing, you’ll be driven to keep on sampling...and sampling.

Poured from growler into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a clear deep golden color with a one finger head of a white foam. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer hits you with quite a bit of pine and citrus hop as well as some sweeter smelling fruit aromas of a tropical and light fruit nature; with hints of tangerine, mango, pear, peach and apricot. Some other light hop aromas of a herbal and floral nature as well as a bit of caramel and bread are there as well, giving overall a nice complex blend of hoppiness and sweeter smells. Taste – The taste begins with a slightly drier flavor containing a more crisp cracker pale malt base and only some very light sweet flavors of lemonade and a bit of tangerine, peach and mango. Right from the start the grapefruit starts out strong matching the more crisp nature of the flavor profile rather nicely. As the flavor advances the fruity flavors seem to dwindle some with other hop flavors of more grapefruit as well as some pine taking the sweet flavors place. A bit of a floral hop and some light herbal hops come at the very end of the taste and mixed with the other hop and the lighter sweet and more cracker flavors, ends up leaving one with a bitter and crisp flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is on the medium side. For the drier flavors the thinner body is quite nice as it creates a nice crisp feel. The thin body in conjunction with the medium carbonation, which adds enough fizz to complement the crisp nature of the brew, but yet does not take away from the hop, overall create a very pleasant feel. Overall – A rather tasty drier and crisp IPA with a nice hop blend and an easy drinking feel. Rather pleasant.

Bottle from La Atlántica bottle shop, Santiago de Compostela consumed at Frank (camper) at Camping As Cancelas a campsite in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, Saturday 21st June 2014 Pours golden with sticky white head, once again crystal malt showing however the hops (Citra) showing better here than in the previous US IPA. Soft in the mouth, citrussy but the malts keeping things in check. Bitterness meanders but its good, actually I like this, its very good. A6 A4 T8 P4 Ov14 3.6

Bottle: The aroma consists of light caramel, citrus, and a touch of fruit. It pours a transparent amber with a one finger orange-tinted off-white head that eventually fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. There is some thin soapy webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of light caramel and fruit. The finish has light-moderate citrus hops/grapefruit and a touch of pine, It’s medium bodied with soft carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall, there’s a little too much caramel for my IPA preferences.
