"Holy Hop, Batman, this beer has aroma." Hops are casted nine different times, it’s a breath-deep-and-shudder-with-pleasure kind of scent that’s all from the Citra hops. With a high alpha acid of 11%, Citra has a cacauphony of flavours and aromas --Citrus, passion fruit, grapefruit, lime, melon, lychee fruit, pineapple, mango, and papaya – and dominates this beer.

Smashbombs olfactory tropical explosion shockwaves your face every time you lift the meringue foam towards you. It’s like the ecru-coloured top of a beer pie before it gives up and grips the glass. You can see the Victory malt’s signature in the amber lights in what is primarily a deep golden beer. And, yes, don’t be fooled --there’s malt going on here, too, as you’ll see in the firey body of this ale that makes Smashbomb Atomic look like it radiates its own energy.

With the first taste, Smashbomb’s 70 IBUs are pronounced. This brew is a little bitter, but bitter like a grapefruit with three tablespoons of sugar on top. It’s also incredibly drinkable. The oddity that’ll keep you tipping the glass is that as this citrus peel front subsides, you actually gleen the sweet flavours of the Victory and Crystal malts. Then, as the bread-puddin’ bicuity sweetness of the malts are chased by the dry, tropical flavour of Citra and the fruit punch bouquet is all in your face with each sip, it’s all is so damn intriguing, you’ll be driven to keep on sampling...and sampling.

I have been waiting to try this ever since it was "banned" initially by the LCBO because supposedly it was too violent in the title???? Anyway found it today and did a sample pack of several flying monkey. This poured from bottle into pint glass. Amber dark medium redish white head. Aroma, boom, I get tons of things, spruce, grapefruit, pineapple so much. Taste is bitter off course, but not off the chart, this blends nice, you get like it says the grapefruit effect with the sugar, I completely remember having that as a kid and now in a beer! You get a creamy texutre and bitter finish, but just right. This is a superb beer, me is a liking!

I picked up a can of this tonight despite the label. Pours a clear, brilliant amber to copper colour with a decent offwhite head that lasts the whole drink. Aroma is pineapple and strong grapefruit. Taste starts with a sweet light malt with notes of caramel, then you get punched in the tongue with hops. There’s an overwhelming grapefruit flavour and underneath that oranges and a woody, earthy note, maybe evergreen. It has a pleasant, medium body and typical carbonation by American standards. All in all this is a grapefruit hopbomb, which I won’t be buying again. But, if you enjoy eating grapefruit this beer might be for you.

12 ounce bottle from Valli Produce in Rockford, IL, served cold in a pint glass. Slightly hazy amber with a moderate head that decays slowly, leaving some fairly thick residue and a small cap...aroma predominantly citric (orange-grapefruit) with some nice dry woody (not resinous) notes; not particularly exciting but well-developed...lovely balance in the body, slightly drier than usual perhaps but still pleasantly juicy and lightly sweet at the front, with the aggressive hop bitterness showing up appropriately in the middle along with a fairly yeasty texture...quite dry at the finish, a bit rough, and very bitter...body is full and carbonation moderate to high. Very very good, perhaps even excellent; it’s nice to know that Ontario is finally catching up.

Bottle from Saveur Biere. Hazy orange with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - grapefruit and old hops. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. Not fresh. 260916

No idea how this beer gets top reviews. Tastes of corn, malt and syrup and harsh bitters that do not blend well together. More like a very malty pale ale than an IPA and nothing atomic about it. I thought I had a bad bottle, but tried it on tap downtown as well and it was the same. Bad batch maybe? Still, not what it once was for sure. Way better options all around these days.

I have deleted my previous rating of this beer to make a point. A number of year’s ago this beer lived up to its name. It was the first really punchy citra ipa in Ontario. It was fresh, juicy and easily the fruitiest hop beer in the province. It is a crime to call this current beer after the same name. For goodness sake, if you are going to change this beer to a mild, malt based ipa, have the decency to give it a different name. What has happened to Flying Monkeys? Serious sell out.

355 ml bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.

Looks: Clear amber colour with a very thin trace of misty yeast particles; Three quarter finger head and soapy white foam which lasts for 1 minute; Excellent sticky lacing with active small carbonation.

Aroma: Fragrant Ale malt, with grapefruits, strong lychee, light pineapples, apricots, floral, sugar, caramel, pine, lemon and grass.

Taste: Close to light Ale malt, with light metallic, strong grapefruits, light caramel, floral, light molasses, spices, dry biscuits, strong lemon, strong bitter hops and sharp grass.

Body: Medium body. Very slick and smooth palate.

Mouth Feel: Solid Ale maltyness in a thick and quite creamy background. Strong citrus hops with strong grapefruits, floral and spices, which mix well with light caramel and fairly light molasses. Biscuity with strong lemon to round. Dry and nice!

Hoppiness: Grapefruits, lychee, light pineapples, apricots, floral, pine, lemon and grass in nose. Strong grapefruits, floral, spices, strong lemon and sharp grass in taste; Bitterness is strong for a lasting, high astringent lemony malty finish.

After Taste: Dry. Citrusy and strong bitter to mouth.

Comments: As single hop IPA , this one’s Citra shines through with strong lychee aroma and expressive lemony hoppiness. Rich body without wheat-thinning is definity a plus, and low sweetness will certainly please a lot of people. Nice one for me!

Bottle at home. Aroma is resinous hops, biscuity malt, pine, slightly sweetish fruits, tropical notes, touch of caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet and moderate to medium bitter. Body is medium. Not a fruity hop bomb, has more of a resinous and biscuity malty profile, but there’s room for some (tropical) fruits as well. Not bad at all, smooth drinkability.

hazy orange to amber colour, one inch, creamy yellowish head; aroma of intensive tropical fruits like mango, passion fruit, some marmalade, hints of grapefruit and some biscuit notes; taste is similar to the aroma with much less intensiveness and harmony; would be a perfect IPA without this ’gap’; nevertheless, it is still very good
