2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Is it just me, or are hardly any breweries making generic golden ales these days? Of all the styles in the spectrum, golden ale is probably the least distinctive of them all. And itís even worse when you get an old golden ale since whatever flavor it may have had is probably faded. Thatís how I felt drinking Foolproof Barstool Golden Ale; itís not a terrible beer, just one that makes you shrug and go ďmeh.Ē
I poured a 12oz can into a little lager glass. There was no freshness date and it cost $1.69 ($0.14 per ounce).
Appearance: Delivers as advertised with a pale golden hue over a slightly cloudy body. Quite bubbly. Pours to a large, white foamy head which laces and retains quite well.
Smell: Next to no aroma; just a generic pale malt scent and a bit of a sourness (which leads me to believe itís old and probably unpasteurized).
Taste: Thereís a lot going on with this beer, and yet nothing at all. After each sip I notice subtle flavor components, but they fade away before I can discern what they are. A pale maltiness dominates the palette, but itís not an especially sweet beer at all. Light cereal grain taste might be a better way to describe it. Through the middle I detect a slight banana character, similar to a Belgian or German yeast ester, but without any spiciness. On the finish thereís a tangy/metallic/acidic off-flavor comparable to that of old orange juice. I can tell thereís a decent, nuanced brew somewhere in here (probably).
Drinkability: While the palette to Foolproof Barstool Golden Ale may not have been ideal, at least it wasnít a challenge to drink. The mouthfeel is consistently carbonated and crisp, though the sourness on the finish is rather annoying after each swig. Thereís a residual aftertaste, but itís tolerable. At 4.5% ABV itís technically a session beer Ė but it needs to have a much more enjoyable taste for anyone to drink it as such.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pretty much an every day blonde here. Sort of a watery mild flavor, with very little hops. Ok for a hot summer day, dinner pairing, or lawnmower beer....maybe a change of pace brew, but not much more.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours a gold from a can. Somewhat overly sweet golden ale, some honey notes in the nose, not too malty not too hoppy as the description says, but not too anything at all. Meh.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can from Brew Topia. Clear gold with ring and lace. Lightly toasted toffee biscuits aroma. Fairly strong toasted toffee sweetness with mild fruit grain and nuts and very mild spicy grassy hop finish. Sweet but not cloying. Not bad for a beginner beer or a beer to substitute for macros at a party. Pretty shameful for a microbrew "flagship" beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Location: 12 oz can from Nikkiís Liquors, 4/10/15.
Aroma: Aroma of lemon, dough, grains, a little spice, and some corn notes.
Appearance: The pour is golden in color, slightly murky, with a small head and minimal lace.
Flavor: Tastes similar to the nose, not as thin as I expected, decent enough overall.
Palate: It has a light-medium body, decent overall mouthfeel, and a lively carbonation.
This one is pretty solid, for the style. Not a great beer, but you could throw a few of these back pretty easily.
