3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the Busy Bee in Raleigh. Bartender told me that Foothills aged Hoppyum in Knob Creek Bourbon Barrels. Couldn’t see it very well being in a dark bar. Aroma tipped me off right away that this wasn’t just regular Hoppyum (which is delicious all by itself!). Aroma of vanilla, tannins from the oak, and citrusy hops. Flavor strikes a nice balance between the barrel aging and the IPA aspects of it. Smooth finish. Kind of a surprising marriage of an IPA and a bourbon barrel, but it worked!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Busy Bee Cafe, Raleigh, NC. Dark orange pour with a short off-white head. Aroma of tangerine, caramel, light pine, and freshly cut grass. Bourbon and oak are noted immediately on the first sip and easily mute the citrus in the hops. Grass and Earth are detected behind the barrel and bourbon. Finishes with more of an alcoholic taste than you would expect from a 6.25% ABV beer. This one grew on me and ended up being a really nice beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap at Foothills. Pours a cloudy orange with minimal white lacing. Aroma has plenty of barrel notes, woody, slight pickle, whiskey, and moderate citrus hops. Flavor is predominantly barrel, slight vinegar kick, with plenty of citrus hops butting its way in. The massive barrel job on this one doesn’t work that well with the ipa it’s sitting on.

Tap at a hockey game. Kind of works but as an IPA fan it is not the most memorable I’ve had.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Not positive as to where I sampled this, but I believe it was at the Floyd Fandango 2011. Semiclear amber orange pour with ring of white head. Way overdone on the ’green’ wood notes. Some caramel. The hop character is very old and tannic wood drying quality on the finish. I think this thing just sat too long in the barrels.

Miltown. Pours cloudy golden amber with one finger of sandstone head. Nose is tannic and oaky, spicy oak. Lots of raw vanilla and a mild showing of citrusy hops. Tons of oak/barrel in the flavor. Dominated by vanillin and citrus rind. Nice mouthfeel with a low carbonation and lasting bite. Compounding of alpha acid and oak.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught at Milltown. Hazy orange with small white head. Nose is citrus, wood, ash, a little sweetness from the barrel, but it’s more noticeable in the flavor. Flavor is interesting. Yes, the barrel cancels out a lot of the hop
Character, but it leaves an ashy, woody, light bourbon. It’s a little bitter and astringent when combined with the ashy character but overall I think the barrel makes an little better than average ipa better.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
snifter at the Busy Bee Cafe. 7/16/11. Ok aroma, barrel seems to bury the familiar hop scent. oak and bourbon were most of what I got, some citrus showed up as it warmed. Cloudy, brownish orange color, No head or lace. Bitter flavor. Medium body, creamy oily mouthfeel, bitter dry finish. It was ok, barrel really mutes the hops. Makes me think ipa aren’t for a barrel, well maybe just a short vist as this was more barrel without much of the very familiar Hoppyum. Worth a try though if they do it again.
