4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 GODiSSOUTHERN (317) - Virginia, USA - JUL 31, 2011
I do not like India Browns. They usually cancel out the good qualities of both browns and IPAs for me, but this was an exception. Strong sweet aroma of bourbon and hops. The base tasted nutty and sweet and the bourbon presence was strong without being hot or harsh. Wonderful hop flavor on the end without the harsh bitterness I tend to see in this style. Great beer.

Bottle acquired via Charleston Beer Exchange. Aroma of cocoa powder, Nestlé Quik, brownie mix, vanilla, brown sugar and toffee. Lots of chocolate, pudding, vanilla bean, and you get the Pappy influence which is AWESOME!!! Medium mouthfeel...really quite good.

Tap at the brew pub. Pours beatuful deep mahogany with some amber tones, small beige creamy head leaving lsome lace. Aroma is toasted malty, sweet vanilla and bourbon with good barrel character, some fruits there too. Flavor is velvety lean, not too heavy, very drinkable with lots of flavors of vanilla, bourbon, oaky, some dill, nice maltyness, medium bitter and sweetness that mates well with the other flavors. Finishes bitter and bourbon.

Mahogany pour on draught at 2012 Winter Warmer, with a nice tan head leaving soapy lace. Big chocolate malty nose. Chocolate in the mouth, silky and dark, with whiskey and tobacco to finish. A touch of ABV to activate the full body makes this absolutely delicious!

Served on draft at Mellow Mushroom in Charlottesville, VA on 3/30/11. 200th North Carolina Rating! Pours a deep slightly hazy copper color with a large dense creamy brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, nutty notes, citrus hops and mild bourbon notes in the finish. The taste is bourbon, mild chocolate nuts and a bitter hop finish. Smooth and well balanced. Medium bodied. Quite a good beer.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Butters (3324) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - JAN 22, 2012
Not positive where I sampled this, but I’m pretty certain it was at the Floyd Fandango 2011. Near clear brown amber pour with good tan head. Smells fantastic! Like faint oak, vanilla, and faded hops. In the flavor, the hops become spicier, but with a perfect balance of wood. Not overly oaky, but definitely supports the base flavors. A little dying on the palate from the oak. A truly great beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Onenote81 (1002) - Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA - JUN 13, 2012
Had this one at the brewpub last night during "trivia night." Came out a tawny copper-brown, with a thin beige head capping it off. The nose is sweet with vanilla, bourbon, oak, toffee. The mouth is mellow with light carbonation; velvet finish. The barrel-character comes through quite a bit on this one, as it masks the hoppy base that this beer has. Yet, this beer isn’t overpowering in its bourbon-character. Vanilla, oak, booze, caramel. Mild bitterness noted, but the hops are near absent. This is a dessert beer if I’ve ever had one. I was a little hesitant with this style being "barreled," but I would get this again. A treat.

On tap. Pours with a clearish brown hued body with a tan head. Aromas of bourbon, malty, lightly spicy and a bit biscuity. Bourbon aromas are smooth and elegant. Flavors are of bourbon, marzipan, molasses, vanilla, a bit earthy and nutty. A bit thin with medium to slightly lively bubbles. Tasty. No hops left.
