UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 This is a very tasty porter with a bourbon essence that doesn?t overwhelm you. Nice coloring, nice porter characteristics, and nice fresh aroma. This doesn?t blow your socks off like a good BBA Imperial Stout because it?s a smoother brew. This has a decent finish with very slight warming feeling. I certainly reccommend drinking this limited brew whenever you can catch it on tap or in bottles (even better).

On tap at the brewer. This one goes up to 11. So dark, almost black. Aroma is mild, doesn’t boast about what’s to come. Very heavy in the mouth and full of flavor. Amazing taste. You can definitely taste the bourbon. Foothills Brewing makes an amazing porter to start with and this only builds on that. Absolutely amazing.

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a big, beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, some bourbon and oak and vanilla, some chocolate, light coffee, and light bitterness. Flavor the same with a nice blend of the bourbon and the base porter. Average to smoother texture. A solid barrel-aged beer.

Draft in Charleston. Menu says "pappy van winkle barrel aged porter". Nose of strong alcohol. Pitch black pour with a medium sized white head. Taste is immediately boozy as well. Not much else besides boost and chocolate here. Good but the porter is masked by the booze and the booze is noticeable. And by noticeable I mean in your face.

Bottle:   Big bourbon aroma, dark brown, nice head and lacing.   Not a real complex Porter, mainly Bourbon with hints of vanilla and graham cracker.   Not too thick, body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Not real complex.   Flavorful, but needs to be a bit more complex and more body.   Seems like a lighter example.

Bottle. Pours a dark amber with small beige head leaving spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is strong roast, caramel, wood, and light smoke. Thin mouthfeel with sweet roast, dark chocolate, caramel and lingering sweet finish. Good.

22oz bottle for $6.99 at D’Vine’s in AdMo. $7 bomber of bourbon barrel something. Good value if nothing else. Pours a watery but opaque black with some lacing, off white head. Nose is nice, not too much barrel, definite caramel and vanilla, most toast and bread crust than a standard barreled beer, some dark fruit, plums and prunes mostly. Flavor is so well balanced, vanilla, caramel, a hint of mocha, some toast, a little raisin, a little prune, some coconut. Not boozy or hot. A bit oily on the end, but very very smooth.

Pours a deep umber color with a finger of khaki foam. Lots of roasted chocolate, vanilla, bourbon heat and something strange is also happening, almost oily buttery coconut notes. Lots of bourbon... a touch thin.

Barrel is well integrated. Pours clear mahogany with good head and lacing. Some sweetness, comes together ok but not a huge body underneath. Tap at Churchkey.

Location: Draft at Mekong, 5/2/14

Aroma: The nose is full of roasted malts, chocolate, bourbon/oak, and some vanilla
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color with a beige head and average lace
Flavor: The chocolate comes out in the flavor, lots of roast too, bourbon is in balanced
Palate: The body is medium-plus, it drinks pretty nicely, with a smooth, light dryness
Overall Impression: Found this one to be a very tasty offering. I can’t speak for how it comes to the non-barrel aged version, but I can say that the barrel flavors play nicely with the chocolate and roasted malt flavors.
