3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 OldGrowth (1862) - USA - APR 18, 2011
on tap at the Busy Bee 01/22/11. Knob creek barrel. Real good aroma, bourbon and chocolate. Blackish brown color, good head, ok lace. Sweet, bourbon flavor. Medium body, smooth oily creamy mouthfeel, sweet dry finish. Strong barrel in both aroma and flavor with classic peoples porter tastiness. good stuff.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Butters (3014) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - MAY 24, 2012
Sampled down at Brewvival 2012. Clear dark brown pour with ring of tan head. Aroma as a slightly bourbony quality. Flavor is semi vegetal, burnt nuttiness, woody and semi bitter. A little thin on the palate. Blah, nothing really special here.

Bottle from Tasty’s, Raleigh (Thanks!) - WOW. This beer works so well in every dimension. I’m astounded how much the bourbon (Pappy Van Winkle if I remember right) adds throughout. It’s got a huge beautiful rocky head that last and lasts with thick sheets remaining down the glass. The aroma is chocolate, vanilla, toffee, and forward but not-overbearing bourbon (not normally something I love to be forward in a beer). These continue in the taste which is very malty, lightly toasted, with some lactic notes that fade into a nice charcoal bitter finish. The body is surprisingly delicate, light, and finishes clean. I wish a had a case of these.

Bottle shared at DLD. Wow, this was a phenomenal porter. Semi-sweet chocolate and coffee with just a hint of the barrel. Glad I got to try this but now the non-BA bottle waiting on me in the cellar has a lot to love up to!

Bottle. Was an extra in a trade. Pours almost pure black with the ever so slightest ruby hue. Nice brown head. Aroma is bourbon, dark candy, sugar. Taste follows with a semi lively mouth feel. This one kicks ass!

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 hopscotch (7542) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 5, 2012
Bottle… This beer rocks!… Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, khaki head. The aroma offers complex layers of milk chocolate, coconut, vanilla and a nice, light nuttiness. Medium to full-bodied and creamy with tingly carbonation. The flavor is both chocolaty and nutty with a nice kiss of bourbon. Finishes bittersweet and a touch papery. Kudos to biggsbowler for sharing this world class bottle of beer!
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 otakuden (1558) - Vero Beach, USA - APR 24, 2012
Appearance: smoky peaty liquid obsidian with garnet streaks along the sides and bottom. Fluffy khaki head resembles freshly frothed espresso, fading soft and slow. Swirls creamy and with a smidge of fuzzy lace.
Nose: rich decadent chocolates up front – big, sultry, and velveteen. Some more bitter black chocolate notes in the back which fades into freshly drawn espresso. Cigar leaf weaves in and out. Black licorice root. Vanilla and caramel mingle harmoniously. Gentle tease of bourbon spice in the back.
Palate: wow! Smooth creamy chocolate that is milky in the middle and darkly bitter in the back. Spicy bourbon notes weave in and out, tickling my tongue at the end of each quaff. My breath is warm, spicy, and oaky. Cooked and cooled and bourbon spiked caramel. Black root leads into burnt black licorice root. Oily cigar leaf. Grows a subtle yet pervasive sweet smoky peaty chocolaty black licorice ménage.
Final Thoughts: this particular beer was a hand bottle obtained from the fine folks at the Charleston Beer Exchange. Bottled on 10/12/2011, the bottle was labeled, cap dipped in wax for extra oxygen protection, she drank as fresh as if I had been there savoring a glass direct from the tap. Delicious! Thanks sis!

Originally reviewed: 8/30/10. Had this on tap at the brewpub waiting for the BA Sexual Chocolate release. Came out in a full pint. Nice. Thin tan lace on top. Big scents of bourbon, vanilla, oak, and light spices like cinnamon/nutmeg. Great smell. The body was perfectly smooth and palate-coating. Decent depth and carbonation level. Smooth bourbon notes mixed with some melted chocolate and roasted malts. This Porter on it’s own is quite hoppy, but this has been mellowed out to become quite a smooth semi-sweet beer. I dig this. Have wanted to try this version for awhile now. Keep it up Foothills!

Black and a thick tan head. Great bourbon vanilla nose. Smooth, sweet lt to med bodied. Biggest fault is that there is so little body. Great bourbon flavors.. Charcoal, oak, vanilla but deeper darker flavors would be great. Still a really good brew

Bottle from Justin in trade. BBL was much better overall. I felt like the normal porter was lacking flavor. Aroma and flavor was of light roast coffee and bourbon. Pretty thin, but the flavors were good in this one. Very nice beer.
