bottle 495 of 500 from 2010 batch. consumed 6/15/11. Good aroma, sweet, has mellowed from what I remember at debut. Less bourbon, more chocolate, getting some fig too. Dark blackish brown color. Small head, ok lace. Bitter flavor. Medium body, smooth oily creamy mouthfeel, Bitter dry finish. Still tasty at this point, though maybe mellowing too much. I feel like I’ve entered this a couple times already, but obviously not. remember a nice bourbon bite fresh, but with enough of the stout to balance.

Thanks Doug. Aroma: dark stone fruits, bourbon, chocolate Taste: lots of whiskey, plum, chocolate This beer was a little thin and overwhelmed by the bourbon barrel. A decent beer.

Review #500!

22oz bottled June 26, 2011. Served at cellar temperature. Thanks to Ryan for working out a trade for this sought-after beer!

Pours dark brown to black with a one finger brown head that recedes to a wispy cap and small ring leaving some spots of lacing behind.

Initial aroma starts with bourbon, vanilla & charred oak, and a strange vegetal/cherry tomato kind of smell. This, luckily, doesn’t last long as soon it opens up to include dark fruits of cherries, dates, raisins, plums and figs, also some roasted malt, chocolate, cola, grassy/herbal hops with some mustiness. The one constant is that the bourbon is the star and it’s some good stuff too. Very good strength.

Flavor is vanilla and chocolate, oak, bourbon, some toffee and caramel, cherries and dark fruits, some smoke/char, citrus hops towards the finish, some bourbon warmth at the end. Moderate sweetness. Also kind of has some Cherry Coke-like qualities.

Mouthfeel is medium/full bodied but a bit thinner than I expect for an Imperial Stout, rather sticky with very active scrubbing carbonation.

A good barrel aged Imperial Stout, but disappointing none-the-less due to the hype/availability. Ultimately comes across as a bourbon barrel Chocolate Cherry Coca-Cola. Kind of. I dunno. This is sort of all over the place as at times it is great, other sips are good, and then sometimes smells/tastes/feels mediocre. I don’t think I’ve ever edited/tweaked/changed a review so many times before.

Glad to have tried it but I’m also glad I didn’t get up at the wee hours of the morning and stand in line for it. Good, if not very good, but not in the top-tier of barrel aged brews.

Sampled at Nashville Beer Summit 1.22.11 - Pours black with a nose of bourbon, wood, vanilla, and sweet oak. A little too similar to some other barrel stouts. Doesn’t stand apart enough. But beers are starting to get lost in the crowd as this tasting goes on. A bit lacking but not much. Still very good. Smooth and easy.

Bottle shared by Shane, thanks! Poured black with a brown head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma had some dark fruits with roasted malt and dark grains. There was a nice bourbon note as well. Flavor began with roasted malts and dark fruits and was balanced out by the bourbon in the finish. A smooth beer as well, but lacked a little body.

Great label art. The mouthfeel hinders this one a bit but overall a rich and bourbonny impy stout.

UPDATED: FEB 26, 2012 I have been looking forward to this beer for a very long time and was excited to crack it open on Halloween with a friend. The smell was nice, coffee, malt, raisin, just a bit of bourbon but not much. Kind of a let down. Thought the taste would compliment the nose but it did not. Very dry and very little bourbon, lots of roast (maybe coffee)? This is just not what the doctor ordered. Kind of a let down but happy I got to try it. What happened Pappy...
