Draft. Dark brown color, medium tan head. Nice aroma of vanilla, dark chocolate. Taste has dark fruit, cocoa, vanilla. Tasty.

Draft 7/8/14 (WOB North Hills- Raleigh)-Pours black with a nice tan head. Aroma of chocolate, bourbon, coffee, and roasted malt. Taste of the same with a big bourbon taste. This medium to full bodied brew was quite tasty but a bit light for this type of beer.

On tap at Foothills. Black pour with fizzy eggshell head. Aroma is oaky and bourbon heavy with coffee ground. Flavor is slightly watery, heavily oaked with strong bourbon notes and a more muted coffee and chocolate flavor. They definitely let this sit in the barrel for a long time. Tastes pretty nice but sort of loses feeling like a stout.

Draft at Closed for Business. Listed as "pappy van winkle stout". Nose is lightly boozy with some vanilla. Pour is pitch black. Taste is a ton of vanilla, cream, and chocolate. Some light milky lactose character. Very smooth. Barrel still seems to dominate most any stout character and leaves the base beer a touch watery

I’m not a huge barrel fan, but then again I can’t really see what the barrel adds to this beer. Especially using the Pappy - you’ve gotta figure if you use these barrels it should be well-employed. Finishes lightly sour. Some dark chocolate - not a huge beer. Tap at Churchkey.

The beer has a near black appearance with a wispy head. Aromas of sweet malt, char, roast, booze. Too sweet and lacking bourbon character. I got excited when I read this was partially aged in Pappy van Winkle barrels, but this didn’t translate to the flavor. Thin body and a bit cloying. This one missed the mark for me.

On tap at Church key. Pours a translucent black with brown lacing and soapy head. Aroma is overly sweet, bourbon, and a certain medicinal quality. Flavor is charred oak, roasted malts and sweet vanilla. Sweet finish.

4 ounces on draft at ChurchKey during the SAVOR Surly event, probably left over from the previous night’s event. Pours black with tan head, good lacing. Aromas of mint, herbs, vanilla, light chocolate. Tasting notes of bourbon, mint, herbs, floral notes, chocolate. Medium body with a semi-dry finish.

Draft at Appalachian vintner. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Nice roasted malt and oak notes on the nose. Fairly big Bourbon note on the tongue that gets more prominent and bold as it warms. Finish lingers a bit. Listed at 7% but feels bigger. Nice!

On tap at the ISIS in Asheville. Pours oily black with a retentive frothy tan head that leaves thick lacing. The nose has roasts and chocolates. A big wallop of bourbon accompanies choco-roasted notes, a hint of smoke and dark malts. The finish comes back to a bourbon close. Full bodied and silky to the palate, it's rich and yummy.
