4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had this one on-tap at the brewpub. Light ruby edges make this one just less-than-black. A nice small cap of foam on top leaves perfect sip rings on the glass edge. Excellent nose bursting with notes of pine scent, citrus, fresh crushed hop pellets. Great inviting hoppy scent!
Good body. Not too thick, easy to drink. Moderate carbonation. Well-balanced. Juicy, flavorful hops make up the bulk of this one. Nice bitter pop to it, but great citrusy flavor. Some mild cocoa-like sweetness noted, a little dry character on the finish. A good dark bitter beer. I like this one better than their standard IPA I think. Nice work retooling this one, Foothills.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours black with a thin khaki head. Lots of roasted malt notes on the tongue. It tastes kind of like tar which is both interesting and extremely off-putting. Itís not my favorite style to be honest so this feels kind of like a best-case scenario for it.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Tar, pine, and soil nose, the former is dominant. Cola black, medium tan head, good lacing. Tobacco, pine, tar. Medium body, easy carbonation. Undoubtedly an IDA, but I like a sharper hop bite.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Taps rich coffee sable with a thick and fine-bubbled tan head. Woody hops and hay dominate the aroma, but gladly share the olfactory stage with roast malt and a whisper of wheat. Flavor delivers woody hops, roast malt, coffee, molasses, and subtle earthy and wheaty tones. Firm body has good strong fizz and leaves a hoppy and roasty/charred finish. Get bitten!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle from Trader Joeís, Raleigh. Dark brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of fresh pine, tangerine, and faint chocolate. Taste features expected citrus and piney hop bitterness with chocolate and coffee malts to balance. This is a very nicely done black IPA.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Finneganís as I wore my kickass holiday suit for the trivia season finale. Moderately thin black pour, fine khaki lacing. Aroma is primarily herbal and pine with mild roast notes. Flavor is IPA foremost. In control pine/spruce hop sting with mild roast in the background. The Black in Black IPA is a secondary character here, which I like. Very clean, crisp, and drinkable.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Pours a black color with off white head. Piney, juniper, resiny, slight roasty aromas. Roasty, piney, herbal, conifer flavors. Not a bad beer, but itís the type of black IPA that Iím not a huge fan of.

I liked the balance between chocolate malt and hops. Neither over powered you.
From site: Embrace the long winter nights in the company of Frostbite Black IPA. A careful blend of barley and roasted wheat malts deliver a clean finish, backed up by a big blast of Pacific North West aroma hops.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Roasted coffee allusions and toasted cereals meet hop resins in this balanced, smooth Black IPA.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the dark brown.
-This is as drinkable as most Foothills brews.
-The nose may be linear, but this remains balanced and enjoyable throughout.
-The texture is smooth.
On tap at the Foothills brewpub.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A dark brown ipa with a thin mocha head. In aroma, nice bitter chocolate with coffee grind, floral hops, grapefruit pulp, nice. In mouth, a nice bitter chocolate malt with coffee grind, musty floral hops, grapefruit pulp, nice. On tap at brewpub.
