Embrace the long winter nights in the company of Frostbite Black IPA. A careful blend of barley and roasted wheat malts deliver a clean finish, backed up by a big blast of Pacific North West aroma hops.

Taps rich coffee sable with a thick and fine-bubbled tan head. Woody hops and hay dominate the aroma, but gladly share the olfactory stage with roast malt and a whisper of wheat. Flavor delivers woody hops, roast malt, coffee, molasses, and subtle earthy and wheaty tones. Firm body has good strong fizz and leaves a hoppy and roasty/charred finish. Get bitten!

12 oz. bottle from Trader Joe’s, Raleigh. Dark brown pour with a frothy khaki head. Aroma of fresh pine, tangerine, and faint chocolate. Taste features expected citrus and piney hop bitterness with chocolate and coffee malts to balance. This is a very nicely done black IPA.

Had this one on-tap at the brewpub. Light ruby edges make this one just less-than-black. A nice small cap of foam on top leaves perfect sip rings on the glass edge. Excellent nose bursting with notes of pine scent, citrus, fresh crushed hop pellets. Great inviting hoppy scent! Good body. Not too thick, easy to drink. Moderate carbonation. Well-balanced. Juicy, flavorful hops make up the bulk of this one. Nice bitter pop to it, but great citrusy flavor. Some mild cocoa-like sweetness noted, a little dry character on the finish. A good dark bitter beer. I like this one better than their standard IPA I think. Nice work retooling this one, Foothills.

A strong Hops aroma with grapefruit, citrus, and floral. It’s black with a dark brown, pillow head. Powerful grapefruit and citrus taste. It’s a strong, powerful flavor with a bitter tart shock to the palate.

Poured into a pint glass out of a growler. Pours a very deep, dark brown with a one finger light tan head. The head retention is better than average with pretty decent lacing as well. Aroma is a nearly perfect example of what an American Black Ale should be. Toasted malt and dark roasted coffee mixed with pine with along with just the slightest touch of citrus. Very nice. The hops become more readily apparent in the flavor compared to the aroma. Lots of pine and earth with just the slightest hint of orange peel. Some minty notes too but all quickly overtaken by a very high bitterness. The pine lingers through the bitterness as does the roast and coffee which is constantly present in the background. Just a slightly sticky finish. Overall, this is a really good beer and much better than I thought it would be. I am really a fan of this style and this is one of the better examples I have had.

Pours the deepest ruby with a tan head that leaves window-wash lacing. The nose is of deep pine. Flavors are of roasted grain, pine needle tea, coffee, citrus, with a clean bitter pine finish. The mouthfeel is round with a medium body. A nicely bitter and roasted Black IPA. Goes down well, tasty and thoroughly enjoyable.

Tap at Mellow Mushroom - Johnson City. Pours clear black with a medium, frothy beige head, long retention with excellent lacing. Aroma is roast, chocolate, and earthy coffee malt, prunes and licorice with earthy, pine, and dank hops. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness, dark malt and fruits with a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Bottle. Pours an almost black color with a moderate off-white (and quickly disappearing) head. Nose is a little hoppy with some pine notes in it, though the malts smooth it out. Maltier than I expected - no real bitterness to this at all.

Aroma of warm maple syrup and bread. Jet black in color with a tan head that dissipates quickly. Tastes like dark roast coffee and plenty of hop spice. Really bitter finish. Lovely beverage.
