Black pour with large tan head which quickly dissipated. Chocolate and coffee in the aroma. Flavor was more chocolate and coffee and some malts, thick but slight bitterness and sweetness mixed in, complex. Very good for style.

Damn fine American porter, perhaps the best in South Carolina now that God only knows when we’ll see Founders again. Deliciously smooth and dry, with a near-perfect swipe of bitter chocolate and roasted malt, yet with a mild, slick texture, making the pint wickedly easy to sip. Couple all this dark beer goodness with a sane ABV, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a pint.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Reviewed from notes.
Pours very dark brown with a nice off white to tan head with a bit of lacing and moderate retention time. Nose is roasted malt with a bit of light chocolate and coffee. The taste is a bit bland with only the roast really coming through, though that itself is well done. Somewhat dry with a good body. Drinks pretty well.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
In short, a classic porter. Dark brown pour, small light tan head. Aroma and flavor both hold bitter chocolate, caramel, roasty bitterness, and a touch of cream. Smooth mouthfeel. Pretty good, but not exciting.

I’m transferring ratings from another beer app to this one. My tasting notes wouldn’t be accurate at this point since they weren’t captured at the time.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2013 Worth searching for- looks and smells appealing and taste doesn’t dissappoint. Reminds me of Trader Joe’s 2010 Vintage Ale, but less carbonated and a more solid mouthfeel. Spices done well- back- up, not lead vocals.
Had on tap at Howard’s pub in Ocracoke. really solid porter- good full body and hits all the right notes of chocolate, coffee, earthy, sweet- lots going on. Pretty heavy- almost like a meal in a glass. really good.

On tap at foothills, dark pour with nice tan lacing, burnt aroma, coffee, maybe some sweet caramel. Quite enjoyable.
