On tap at the Leesville Taproom in Raleigh. Black pour gives way to a very small tan head. Roasty coffee and some chocolate aroma and flavors. Nice chocolate character as well. Solid porter.

Rcvd in trade. Reviewed by notes. This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice looking dark hazy brown to an almost black color. The lacing was a nice looking sticky streaming trickles sliding right on down into the beer. The smell had a nice roasty to sweet dark chocolate to light coffee blend. The taste took those previously mentioned flavors to blend extraordinarily. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. The carbonation seemed appropriately styled to have a fairly good roastiness on the tongue and still allowing a decent sharpness from some bitter coffee beans to make a worthy effort of a pummeling on the tongue. Overall, this was a pretty good Porter I’d have again.

12oz bottle in a snifter. Pours near black with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, some chocolate and toffee, light coffee, and light notes of bitterness and dough. Flavor the same. Average texture. A decent porter.

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz ($2): Pours pretty near to black with a great looking head. Aroma is earthy, toffee, caramel, plant matter, and hints of coffee. Taste to me seems more coffee. Somewhat mineralish and herbal. Interesting flavors. Well balanced through and through. Very smooth. Very slightly sweet. Mild sugary afftertaste.

Bottle:   Sweet roasty nose, seems a touch ashy.   Dark chocolate and roasted malts on the tongue.   Light to moderate bitterness.   Some dark chocolate notes as well.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Smooth otherwise.   Decent balance, clean finish, lingering sweet roastiness.   Solid porter, but nothing that special.   Thanks Brad!

12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a very dark ruby color. The head is a fluffy, creamy two-finger mocha shade. It has a soft texture, nice retention, and leaves behind plenty of splotchy lacing on the glass. S: There’s a good deal going on in the nose. Milk chocolate seems to be the dominant note, while both cream and coffee do a good job of underlying it. I also seem to pick up something suggesting citrusy as well. Citrusy hops don’t always work in a porter, but they do here. Everything seems to be well integrated. T: I don’t pick up much of the chocolate or cream I did on the nose. Rather, the most prevalent flavor is coffee - and lots of it. When done right in a porter/stout, piny hop bitterness can make the beer generally resemble espresso, and it does here. Post-swallow, there’s less of a coffee flavor and more of a general hoppy note. Very vague suggestions of fruit esters seem to hang around here and there. Hoppy porters are never my favorite style, but this one seems to work quite well considering. M: There isn’t much heft on the palate; since this is more sweet than bitter, this lightness is welcome. It’s also bone dry and strongly carbonated; naturally, this is very easy to drink. O: A decent - if not amazing - robust porter, the hops here work better than some others in the style. Still, I wish some more of the malt character came through.
