Tap at Southern Rail. Pours a deep ruby looking black. Thin layer of coffee foam. Nose is rich malted milk balls, milk chocolate. Moves to puppy breath. Taste is tangy, lemon tea. Pretty thin with some soil/earth grittiness. Pretty average overall. Soil grittiness and lemon tea character unwanted. My rating: 3.2. Fiancé rating: 3.7. She says a bit chalky on finish and coffee forward. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Liked the chocolate & toffee. Had a bitter sweet finish that I didn't care for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with faint orange highlights and a large creamy beige head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was dry, roasty and woody. The flavor was dry, roasty, woody, smoky and had notes of cola, vanilla and a hint of charcoal. Very long roasty wood and smoke finish. Medium body.

Pours a rich burnt umber color with three fingers of khaki foam that sticks nicely. Nose is soft roasted cocoa, deep earthy toffee notes and a hint of vanilla. Palate follows the nose with a nice roast level, some layered burnt earthy flavors midpalate that smooth out with some bittersweet bakers chocolate on the finish.

Roasty nutty aroma. Taste is a full flavor coffee cocoa and smokey nut taste. Good for an English style porter which I usually shy from. Very drinkable.

Transfer from BA review on 5-27-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance-The beer pours a nice deep brown color with a small rocky brown head that was present upon pouring. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a light level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell- The aroma was rather heavy of dark roasted malt and aromas of chocolate malt. There are undertones of coffee as well as a light sweetness of caramel and vanilla Taste - The taste begins with a big roasted malt flavor with lots of chocolate tones upfront. Caramel and toffee flavors mingle with these soon after the start, sweetening the taste very lightly. These taste mingle until the end to where they are joined by a roasted coffee and a bit of earthiness. In the end, these new flavors bitter the taste more, with the mix of flavors overall leaving a roasted and bitter chocolate flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel –The body of the brew was on the slightly thinner side for a porter with a carbonation level that was light. The thinner carbonation was great for all the roasted flavors and made for a smooth drinker, although the thin body took away from these slightly and may have been better accentuated by a thicker body. Overall- A decent porter overall. It had a good level of roasted chocolate and dark malt flavors with a nice bitter bite at the end. Not bad.

Robust coffee and chocolate flavor. Dry. Very dry...chalky aftertaste. Needs some sweetness to support the coffee/chocolate and combat the chalk.
