4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft. The visuals live up to the advertisement ... thick, brooding and well topped with one of the darkest heads I’ve seen. Drinks with an almost gritty sense of overflowing chocolate, well bodied and exceptionally easy to drink. Little to no evidence of 10%, which is a plus in my book. Very, very good. (#5438, 2/15/2014)

Two half pints on tap. Opaque with a small ring of cream. Mild aroma of chocolate, espresso, graham cracker and wood. Tastes of espresso, bitttersweet chocolate, berries, a touch of soy sauce, blackstrap molasses and hints of merlot and oak on the finish. Heavy body is smooth with a fine medium-high carbonation. Gets slightly sticky and shows a bit more of the abv than is necessary, but has a nice balance.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This beer exceeded my expectations. Delighted to find it on tap valentine’s day. Booziness is very well controlled and almost not noticeable until the end. Very good chocolate without being overstated. minor licorice and caramel flavors as well. The strength of this beer is that it flows so well. No portion is out or place. Imperial stout is pretty easy to get right but this beer definitely gets it right

2/14/12. Draft at Bull McCabes. Pours deep dark brown with a one finger head of mocha foam. Wonderful roasty chocolate nose with a touch of hops. Great chocolate stout balance of sweet, dark malt, and hop. Definitely sweeter and thicker than many choc stouts. How I like it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at b dubs. Kegs of this seem to be popping up everywhere. Deep brown with a tiny tan head. The nose is pretty sweet burnt brown sugar, slightly bitter dark chocolate. Booze-spiked hot chocolate. The taste is hot runny sticky toffee pudding. Roasted malt bitterness. Dark chocolate. Full body, oily. Tasty.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
On draught at the Trailhouse Restaurant in Black Mountain, NC, this pours opaque black into the glass with a wispy eggshell head that leaves soapy lacing. The nose is of chocolate-covered cherries and rum balls. Flavors are rich, of deep dark chocolates, cocoa, deeply dark pitted fruits, rum balls, coffee grains to finish, with a lingering ABV coffee essence after the pull. Very substantive, with a rich full body, dark complexities for days, and a velvety smooth mouthfeel. Goes down the pallet very well as an aperitif or dessert. Great job here!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at County Grill Yorktown. Listed at 9.5% ABV. Black pour with a short tan head. Aroma is strong roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, hops and burnt caramel. Taste is roasted malt, floral hops, dark chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, toasted dark bread and soft vanilla notes. Body is medium-full with a moderate bubbly carbonation. Finishes with more roasted malt, chocolate, light vanilla, caramel, dark bread, dark fruit and floral hops. Is this good? Yes. Does it deserve beer nerds lining up at the break of dawn to get it. Nope. Not even close.
