I thought I was going to get shut out of trying this becasue I got to Brewgrass late and theyíd already run out, but lo and behold, they decided to tap another keg later in the day. So, is this just another big stout with a lot of hype and a catchy name? Well, yeah, itís got that, but it lives up to the hype, smooooove like Billy Dee as Lando Calrissian, with a ton of chocolate and coffee in the nose, and definate fruity notes in the flavor. Unexpected notes of dark rum pop up too, and itís remarkably full bodied throughout. Really, really good. Sampled at 2007 Asheville Brewgrass.

Five hundy. Sampled multiple times at Brewgrass 2007. Black in color with very little head. Swirling elicits a very dark tan head, but itís short-lived. Heavy roasted aroma with mild espresso and mad chocolate. Surprisingly, little alcohol on the nose. Perfect palate, in that it isnít overly thick and it goes down very smooth indeed. The taste has a smooth roast/coffee start and moves on to a spicy-bitter roast coffee and light alcohol middle. The finish leaves you with a warm, clean roasty glow. Like Cleopatra Jones to Shelly Winters in the classic Blaxploitation flick, Ms. Chocolateíll get you in the end, and sheís one bad mother-(shut yo mouth!).

#900!!!! Poured at the Brewgrass Festival in Asheville. Pours a very dark brown, bordering on black, with a light little light brown head. Rich looking. Smells of monster chocolate and dark malts. Light on the roast as the chocolate flavors overpower anything in its site. Iím drooling at this point. The taste is really smooth chocolate malts pretty much the whole way. The 10% is masked with amazing efficiency, with almost no bitterness in the aftertaste or the finish. Absolutely awesome brew, made the whole trip to NC worthwhile for me. I did have seconds and thirds of this! Bravo!

Rating #300. Handbottle tasted at Saarlanderís SoCal tasting with saarlander, cquiroga, dirty_martini & kittiesandbeer, JohnC and others. Thanks to Chris, cquiroga, for bringing this awesome rare gem. The brewery is close to my parents house, so I hope to visit sometime this year. Small head with fine bubbles with dark black color. Super flavorful, reminiscent of Rasputinwith itís mloasses, brown sugar and caramel sweetness. Delicious!

Although I donít recall the place in Asheville I managed to find this stout, I found it. I anticipated chocolate and espresso flavors, but I didnít expect them to be so robust. The look of the beer is more complex than just "black" or "dark" its more like a beautiful, oily maduro wrapper. I would highly recommend this beer on tap, lovely.

Handbottle from Sliffy!!!! Thank you so much Dan! Drunk on 8/16/07
Holy shit, let me just say that I didnít exactly drink this as soon as I got it. I probably held on to it for a good month, before drinking it, simply because I never made time to drink it. I was a bit worried as to the condition it would be in, but I had kept it cellared at a very constant, cool temperature, and apparently, whoever handbottled this did one hell of a job too. You could hardly convince me that this wasnít a bottle conditioned, fresh bottle. Massive, cascading, pillowy tan head tops a deathly black body, with medium clarity. Retention and lacing are both stellar.
Moderately aggressive roast bitters the nose, as the hops hit as well, fortunately being less powerful than the roast and having an interesting fruity quality in addition to the expected resin/grapefruit acidity. Seemingly very well built, with streaks of anise and vanilla running through the roast, and collecting in a pool of sweet choco-caramel malt sugars that are splashed with espresso liqueur-like notes. Definitely some yeast dryness, and even a good measure of vinous prune notes make their way out, on the finish, and with warming. What really sparks my interest, is the power that the aroma is able to convey, without any unnecessary sweetness. Vanilla-chocolate-cream notes are all perfectly set against the roast, which is further augmented by some tastefully done (minimal) charred dryness. Smells like a really nice bottle of expedition, to be quite honest. Alcohol is well-concealed, aroma strength is medium to medium-high, with no flaws perceptible.
Chocolate and coffee-roast dominate the first sip, as a healthy bitterness from the roasted malts immediately brings dryness. Hops pack quite a punch, with dry, resinous pine and flavorful, but very bitter, orange and grapefruit notes. For whatever reason, the citrus/pine notes donít seem at odds with the chocolate. Actually, the reason is probably that the beer is well-attenuated and not dominated by coffee through and through. I find the really sweet Imperials to be the ones that clash with the heavily citric hops, as the intense, gooey chocolate, just dosent seem well-matched to juicy, bitter citrus notes, IMO, at least. Very well-structured malts show tons of heft and chewiness of the top-notch imperials. This is just a shade under the body of some of the best bottles of expedition Iíve had. With warming, some chocolate fudge-like sweetness emerges on the finish, somewhat simplifying things, as the roast intensity dies down a bit as well. Some peanut-brittle-like oxidation is notable, not sure if thatís from hand-bottling it or not. It, in addition to some yeast dryness/blandness, slightly mutes some of the quality, and the hops are a bit more acidic/biting than I really think they need to be, but other than that, the satisfying, but well-attenuated body and tight, low carbonation serve up quite a treat. Alcohol adds light warmth, but is otherwise well-concealed.

Handbottled by Sliffy (excellent job on the hand bottle!). Wow. Iím speechless as Iím typing this little ditty. Recalling how intense and smooth this beer is reminds me of listening to Stevie Ray Vaughn wail thru Texas Flood, or Eric Johnson running thru the Cliffs of Dover. Incredible from start to finish, this beer did not let down for one second. The beer pours out an oily, blacker than black viscuous liquid with a nice 1 inch light brown head with nice staying power and decent lacing. Aroma I first whiff is chocolate of course. Whoíd name a beer Sexual Chocolate without having a massive amount of chocolate malt in their beer. But there is more than just that. There some nuttyness, campfire smoke, wood, dark fruits, a bit of leather with a touch of alcohol and molasses. The beer is smooth and creamy on the palate with a stickyness to keep things interested. Flavor is just sublime. Notes of dark chocolate, sweet malts, smoke, nuts, roasted coffee, with enough dark fruits to make it seem almost vinous in quality. The only thing I found to nitpick was a bit of too much alcohol in the flavor, but aside from that small issue this was a top notch, outstanding beer. Highly recommend you seek this out if you can.

Handbottle thanks to Sliffy and Puddintane. Black pour with a short tan head. Aromas of hazelnut, dark fruits, roasted malt, light coffee and chocolate. Flavors of dark chocolate, light booze, smokey roasted malt, bitter coffee and some vinous elements as well. Thick body with a soft carbonation...roasty, boozey, and vinous with a roasty finish.
