UPDATED: AUG 16, 2011 On tap at Tylerís in Carrboro. Pours a deep brown with a small tannish yellow head. I tasted before I smelled. Big gulp. Dark chocolate boozy milkshake. Stuck my nose in, though a little too cold still, got some nice notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Very boozy. As it warmed, the nose grew more interesting, and developed on my palate. Silky smooth body and a sure pleasure to drink. I want a growler too!!! **********Had a couple more pours. this beer is growing on me. Gotta bump it up a couple more points from my original rating.

2007 GABF Jet black pour big brown thick well laced head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and roasty malts. Well coated palate, a bit small for this beer. Big flavor, some choclates, some burnt coffee, roasty, a touch of lactose. good but not as great as advertised.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle 370/500, with thanks to Pete. Velvety black pour skinned with tanned marshmallow yellow. Aroma is distinctly bright with sweetness of dark toffee and molasses; underneath, prune and red licorice glazed in quiet milk chocolate. Slightly watery and very understated. Flavor is mildly medicinal, but not alcoholic, defined by black cherries, citrus, cocoa, heather honey and candy sugar. Very light hearted sweetness in general, showing a soft, careful chocolate presence throughout; purportedly massive hop contributions shine through only with the juicy fruit acids that slowly and consistently soak into the thick foundation of malt, and recall the bright tones of deep roasted latin american coffees in that exchange. Palate is slightly watery, but reasonably syrupy, and very smooth. Finishes with dried out chocolate, some hazelnut and the plastic texture of raw, bottom shelf espresso. Far from being compelling or especially memorable, this is still pretty flawless and very easy to drink.

Black pour, faint beige head. Aroma is chocolate, straight hersheys. Flavor is dry, chocolate, some espresso. Hoppy aftertaste, citrus hops, creamy yet bitter. Bittersweet chocolate, some caramel and a bit more coffee. Dry mouthfeel, bitter coffee, hoppy and a little chalky aftertaste.Itís good but Iím glad I didnít buy into the hype, nothing seperates this from other imperial stouts.

Dark dark pour with thick tan head. I actually found this one a little disappointing. For all the hype that itís gotten, I just didnít think there was much there. It was thinner and less flavorful than most big impys that I drink on a regular basis.

Bottle, 2009. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, sweet malt, bitter chocolate. Flavor is sweet and malty upfront with a cocoa finish. A bit on the sweet side. Meh, this was a good impy but it certainly wasnít a great one for me. 7/4/8/4/14 (3.7/5)

RBSG09 Grand Tasting notes (thanks to whoever brought it). Pure chocolate bomb. While it does a great job with creating a good chocolate flavor, I didnít find a lot of complexity. Very good aroma, all chocolate but wonderfully intense. Tastes like rich, high quality semi-sweet to milk chocolate. The best chocolate flavor Iíve found in a stout, however itís kinda one note stout in a field of deep, dark, gigantically complex entries. Preferred the CC 110k+ from that night by a fair margin.

Shared by hophead75 - thanks again! Bottle #7something. Pours jet black with a thin, dark brown head that is short-lived. Scents of some espresso coming through and, after a twirl, some chocolate, but the blackstrap molasses definitely dominates here. This is a surprisingly thin Imperial Stout, but the flavors of dark chocolate and espresso make it really enjoyable to drink.

A: A beautiful looking pour: dark as night with a solid tan head on top. The beer pours with a nice viscosity to it as well. S: A lot of roasted malt with perhaps a touch of char. There is a hint of smoke too, along with chocolate and coffee. T: The flavors are quite similar to the nose. A really impressive roasty quality that does not completely overwhelm the beer. A mix of dark and milk chocolates along with some coffee and a light hint of smoke. M: This one is medium in terms of body with a moderate level carbonation. D: A pretty easy to drink beer for a Russian Imperial Stout. Quite minimal alcohol presence, and easy to drink.

09 bottle crushed with CaryTheDude. Black pour with tan ring around the glass. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, moderate roast. Some dark fruits like figs and prunes. Flavor is lighter on the chocolate than I expected. Still, mostly coffee and chocolate thing going on with some fruit. Luckily, sweetness is kept in check. Pretty well balanced. Mouthfeel is nice. Finishes long with a chocolaty bitterness. Pretty good beer, but not great.
