Our Copperhead Ale is a copper colored German-style Altbier, with a light, malty sweetness and a pronounced hop flavor. Alt is the German word for old, referring to the older style of ale brewing. Altbier is Germanyís pale ale. Copperhead Ale is top-fermented, making it an ale and it has a medium body. It has hints of maltiness and hoppiness in its aroma, with a definite hop flavor and a medium hop bitterness. Altbier is predominately brewed in the northern part of Germany, especially Dusseldorf and gets its "sweet roast" flavor and copper color from caramunich malts.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2012 Draft pint at Green Leafe Cafe. Bronzed amber with virtually no head and only barley carbonated. Light stealthy aroma (not much of one at all). Crisp and tangy with an apple-like bite, underlying caramel and a finish thatís mysteriously empty of flavor. The tangy bite lingers. This even-keeled beer was good with my patty melt. (#3146, 10/19/2007) <<Re-rated from a bottle ... much better body, decent head, and a good mouthfeel. Confirms that Green Leafe can serve old beer.>>

Pours a deep amber, with a slight white head. Aroma and flavor are primarily of light caramel malt, and a slight bitter hoppiness. The mouthfeel seemed a bit flat. Not bad, but not great either.

Bottle: Poured a deep clear copper color beer with a nice foamy head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of light caramel malt is bit weak. Taste is dominated by some light caramel malt and some unrefined grain or adjunct that is not too pleasant. Body is a bit light with some good carbonation. I was under the impression that this was an amber ale until I check on the website and noticed that this was an attempt at an Altbier Ė definitely off-style but fortunately I donít rate to style .

This ale pours a nice copper with a pretty decently primed head. The notes are light and malty. The flavors show a crsip and hoppy flavor which offers a nice balance between the crispness and the bitterness.

UPDATED: MAR 3, 2008 This is the beer that turned me on to good craft beer. I know itís a bit ironic considering that this is not much of a craft beer. Until I had a pint of this a few years back I used to think that Guinness was the best thing around. I havenít been able to duplicate my experience with this or any other Fordham product, but it opened the door for me and for that I give it a lot of credit. Itís not as bad as the ratings may indicate here. I suggest you try it only if you happen to find yourself in the Rams Head Tavern though...not worth going out of your way for.

UPDATED: JAN 31, 2009 Draft. Clear copper with small head. Pretty malty, but some nice grapefruit hoppiness tingle keeps it interesting on the end.

Pours a medium yellow color with a fizzy, off-white head that again, quickly dissipates. As with the last offereing, there is little to no lacing. Body settles clear with a much darker, light to medium amber hue with a slight haze. Aroma is moderately malty with hints of molasses. Initial taste is moderately bitter, finishing a light bitter finish with a short duration. Light on the mouth, it has a smooth texture with soft carbonation. Reviewed on January 4th, 2007.

Bottle. Pours pale amber with a diminshing white head.Sweet bready and biscuit aroma. Medium thin texture. Initial flavor of german palt malts, toffee, and white bread. Transitions to a soft medium hop bitterness. Sweet malty finished nicely balanced by an herbal hoppiness. I donít see the stink with this, this is pretty decent. I would drink this again. More british in character though.

12 oz bottle - not sure if I got a bad batch or what because my cap wasnít clamped on as tightly as it should have been. I was rather displeased with this beer (possibly worrying if it was bad or not). Tasted stale and/or old - Iím going to chalk it up to a bad bottling, though and give a higher score than I should.

12 oz Bottle-poured a clear copper color w/a slight off white head. Slight roasted malt aroma. Little bit of hops on the front w/ some malt bitters that follow. Standard Altbier/Amber. Itís a solid, easy drinking sesson beer. Nothing wrong with it-nothing spectacular. Nice fresh taste but itís kind of thin & short-Iíd like to try it on tap & see if there is a big difference-might be a lot better.
