16 ounce pint - Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Served up a matte black body with a finger of pillowed, ecru foam. Sheet-inducing, coating lace on the descent.
Smell: Moderately sweetish scent of caramel, chocolate, and roast -- it seems less coarse, roastwise, than I recall it being in previous years. Little hints of fruit, little hints of the alcohol within.
Taste: A sweet flavor of caramel paired with roasted, coffee-accented malts, almost ahead of the chocolate quality. Roasty astringency, but there’s a moderate hop bitterness in there as well. Small hint of fruitiness underneath the maltiness. Semi-sweet, chocolaty (though not necessarily semi-sweet chocolate) finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.
Overall: Doesn’t have the Mister Wonka confectionery quality of a Rogue Double Chocolate or Southern Tier Choklat and is more akin to a Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, particularly as there’s no actual chocolate used. I liked it well enough and like the aforementioned stouts as well, so, it’s really just up to what you want: candy bars or no candy bars.
3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 wedgie9 (1596) - Nashville, Tennessee, USA - DEC 22, 2011
Tasted on 12/22/11 from a capped 650mL bomber bottle purchased at Binny’s Lincoln Park. Pours a nearly black, dark brown with a thick, rocky tan head that slowly recedes to rocky lace, leaving some lace residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is deep and roasted with tons of chocolate ranging from sweet milk to bitter dark, along with some underlying mocha coffee. The flavor is the same, with tons of milk and dark chocolate, a lightly nutty note, and some mocha coffee bitterness. The body is full and creamy with light, very smooth carbonation, and a long milk and dark chocolate, somewhat bitter mocha, and lightly nutty finish.
