The fifth member of the series, Smoked IPA, mingles a soft sweet smoke with citrus zest in the aroma, each fighting for dominance. Strong hop bitterness cuts through at the end to keep this beer clean, bright and full of flavor. FCB utilizes hand-crafted malts from Copper Fox Distillery to process a floor malted, dried in a traditional wood-fired kiln, and smoked by smoldering select fruitwoods on top of the distillery kiln room’s cast iron stove to create the unique flavor palate of the Smoked IPA.

On tap at Gravity 1020. Appearance: 2 fingers offwhite head, copper color, good lacing, clear. Aroma: smoke, floral, caramel, light grapefruit. Palate: medium body, bitter finish, oily texture, dry finish, thin. Taste: Sweet smoke, into a light fruit sweet, and on into a grapefruit bitterness that lasts. Overall, good balance, very unique, cops cuts smokiness in a very good way. Did not expect to like this beer, but what a pleasant surprise!

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2014 10 oz at the brewery. Pours copper with a small white head. Smoky, smoldering aroma right up front with grassy and citrusy hops as well. The smoke is very ashy, very sharp. They probably intended that to compliment the hops and it works. Good grassy hop bitterness coincides with sharp campfire notes. It’s like being out in a mountain campground after the fire has died down to coals. Really well done and excellent smoked presence.

Bomber from Supermarket Liquors in Fort Collins. The hops are pretty straightforward in the aroma, I actually prefer the hop profile on this one to their standard IPA. It’s basic, probably something along the lines of cascade, but assertive and very clean. The smoke is right underneath creating an interesting citrus/meat nose that actually works quite well. The hops again separate themselves well in the flavor and create a lingering citrus bite. The smoke is more like campfire and ash, and relatively subtle. Definitely a unique beer and it works for me. I quite like it.

Fine white foam copper color. Tangy front end loads of smoke pushing through piney aromas straight into bushy bitterness. Strange and challenging but ultimately not something I could get into
