The fifth member of the series, Smoked IPA, mingles a soft sweet smoke with citrus zest in the aroma, each fighting for dominance. Strong hop bitterness cuts through at the end to keep this beer clean, bright and full of flavor. FCB utilizes hand-crafted malts from Copper Fox Distillery to process a floor malted, dried in a traditional wood-fired kiln, and smoked by smoldering select fruitwoods on top of the distillery kiln room’s cast iron stove to create the unique flavor palate of the Smoked IPA.

Bottle, shared with Parksy. Hazy golden body, soapy white head. Campfire smoke with underlying soapy and fruity hops. I like smoked ales, and I like this idea for a series of beers. Unfortunately this didn’t work for me-- I think the hops and the smoke clash, ultimately diminishing each other. Just ok.

On tap @ the brewery. Hazy dull orange appearance with a tan head. Mint, ashy smoke, light piney, orange, and cleanser in the nose. Heavily bitter flavor. Tastes like chemical, burnt ash, and death. Very soapy and bitter. Bad.

22 oz bottle shared from Applejack, into a pint glass. Gold and pretty clear appearance with light lacing. The aroma is smoky, earthy and woody, kind of like a campfire. Strong smoky flavor with mild hop bitterness and a touch of citrus coming through. Lingering smoky finish. This one is pretty smoky, they could have toned it down some to let the hops come through. I still thought it was alright though.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, very well retained, ivory head sith slight lacing, over a hazy, amber (SRM 9) body.....nose is moderate smoke, pine, citrus peel, cereal malts....taste is light smoke, slight floral honey sweetness, cereal malts, pine, citrus, finishing with a light hop bitterness.....mouth feel, light of medium body, no alcohol, moderate carbonation without creaminess. This is a very lightly smoked beer (comparing to Rauchbiers). It is also, underlying, a very light and simple IPA. It is not a badly made beer, it is just not particularly interesting. It needs more from both the malt and hop backbones or perhaps just a tremendous boost in smoke. BJCP 7/3/13/4/6

Very complex flavors here. Lots of smoke and hops. Good beer that is worth checking out.

Bomber from Capone’s, Hazy copper pour. Nose was hoppy, rauchy, caramel. Tasted very rauchy, not to the level of the Aecht offerings, but intensely rauchy, with well integrated hops, caramel, hops, and florals.

Bomber from hyvee, shared with pals at club w.. (sea-food taco day 3 adventure) pours dark cloudy orangish with white head, very smoky and pine right away, and turns into a bitter finish, not bad, but wouldnt do again

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, grapefruit, resin), with notes of smoke/ashes, wood, lemon juice, yellow squash, manure. Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation. Surprisingly poor compared to the others in the series (other than the Chili Lime one, which was also not very enjoyable). This one is kinda sour and dirty, and the smoke character is pretty generic/ashy. Not terrible, but certainly below average. Probably not the best style to smoke anyway...not to say it couldn’t work, but it just seems like bright hops and smoke would clash, and that is true here.

On tap at Gravity 1020. Appearance: 2 fingers offwhite head, copper color, good lacing, clear. Aroma: smoke, floral, caramel, light grapefruit. Palate: medium body, bitter finish, oily texture, dry finish, thin. Taste: Sweet smoke, into a light fruit sweet, and on into a grapefruit bitterness that lasts. Overall, good balance, very unique, cops cuts smokiness in a very good way. Did not expect to like this beer, but what a pleasant surprise!
