We ventured into unfamiliar territory to create an IPA to fit our style. An intense floral nose, firm balanced flavor and long hoppy finish make Rocky Mountain IPA our very own.

Pours amber with medium-sized, rocky beige head. Aroma is caramel upfront, light floral and citrus notes. Flavor is quite bitter, thick caramel and toffee malt flavors, hints of citrus fruit – lemon peel, orange, grapefruit. Finish has oily, astringent bitterness, but overall has a slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Hops are pretty dead in the aroma at first, but once it warms up they start come alive. Pine, subtle grapefruit and lemon. Some sweet malt slides through but what’s there isn’t too great-dusty and sweet. Demeanor of the mouthfeel is too prickly for me, but the fullness of the body is good. I wonder what hops they used, because this is definitely not a soft bitterness, but rather quite rough indeed. In fact, if you’re not in the mood to chew on some ornery hops in an IPA, save it for another time. Taste shows more grapefruit hop character. Finish is not all that dry really, but the bitterness is left on the tongue for quite awhile or perhaps it’s just a bit of hops causing as much trouble and discomfort to my palate as possible. It’s a good thing I enjoy hop shenanigans.

12oz bottle: Pours a dull copper with little head. The nose is clunky, with dull hops, lots of sweet caramel and a dominant earthy character. The body isn’t much better. Orange and grapefruit lead the charge, with syrupy caramel bringing up the rear. The hops are dull and muddled and the malts seem underattenuated. Hmm, not for me.

Amber color beer with an attractive, fluffy off white head. Nose of grain and grassy hops. This IPA hassome orange juice and tangerine citrus, but the finish has the same cut grass bitterness that I get out of GLBC Burning River that I find a little harsh. Light caramel sweetness with some doughy bread under it. Easy drinking IPA that would stand up well to bar food. Thanks to Blackforestcol for the bottle.

UPDATED: FEB 27, 2008 Bottle. This IPA delivers on its promises of an intense floral aroma and a long, hoppy finish. Medium amber pour with a small, slightly off-white head. Huge floral aroma with notes of toasted grain. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. Medium body and watery texture. Long, thick, sticky floral finish.

Naka (716) - Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 25, 2008
Pours a butterscotch/orange color with a thick, creamy, lasting head. Strong bitter nose of floral and grass clippings with a hint of sweetness. A very dirty hop flavor. Doesn’t have the strong citrus or floral that so many American IPAs have. There are some nice honey undertones that create some balance. It is a little bit tannic and has a really dry finish.

(12oz bottle, thanks artusory) Small beige head atop clear amber body. Aroma is medium sweet, pine/grapefruit, cat urine, light straw. Taste is medium sweet, herbal/grapefruit, light caramel. Light-medium body.

Bottle via trade. beautiful looking IPA. Orange golden color, piney citrusy hop aroma. Flavor does not equal the visual beauty. Something seems a little off. Decent piney.hop flavor. I see some call it earthy, maybe but overall an ok IPA

12oz bottle, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a deep, orange-golden color; light tan head with decent retention and lacing. Solid floral and earthy hops in the aroma; earthy malts and candy sugar underneath. Medium mouthfeel: slightly dusty and earthy malt character, with a decent amount of floral / earthy hoppiness; the dustiness detracts, but otherwise a solid, catty IPA. Medium, bittering citrus and earthy hops in the finish; some astringency.
