4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Drake (6491) - Ivy, Virginia, USA - JUN 24, 2012
Bomber shared by Butters at the 18th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized frothy brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate and raisin. The taste is chocolate, raisin, bitter pine and resin hops, candied fruits. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness. More like a hoppy Brown than a Black IPA, but still really good.

Weak cola smell. Cola brown, medium yellow head. Tangy char on the front end. Bitter on the back, perhaps pine.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 tia (763) - Sandston, Virginia, USA - JUN 23, 2012
Bottle @ 18th RG. Very dark with minimal head. Smells like biscotti with a bit of roast. Tastes sweet then roasty then a really delayed bitter. Sweet and bitter both follow through.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Butters (3321) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - JUN 23, 2012
Sampled at the at 18th Richmond gathering. Side by side with the wheat and the belgian. This was my favorite. Great dark brown pour with thin layer of brown head and sudsy lacing. Piney and woodsy hop profile is surprisingly more exemplified on the flavor than the aroma. I really don’t get much balance for roast or malt, but its still pretty good. Bitter finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Papaganu (5) - Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA - JUN 9, 2012 does not count
Draft poured at Fishales in Panama City, FL. Clear, black with a small frothy brown head and excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted sweet malt and hop with a small alcohol aroma. Medium body with a dry oily texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good complex beer.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Onslow (924) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - MAY 30, 2012
Pour from a 22oz bomber. Inky dark brew with tan head. Aroma of floral and citrus hops blended with roasted grain and coffee. Interesting. Taste follows aroma, but with an emphasis on the IPA elements. At times the bitter hops and the roasted grains really seem to clash, at other times it seems very interesting. Interesting indeed, I doubt I’d buy again.
2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 ICEatALAMO (533) - Troy, Michigan, USA - MAY 19, 2012
Bottle. Pours fairly dark with head that sticks around. The aroma has a lot of hops with some notes of a porter. Taste is nothing special and leaves a decent amount of bitterness. Just an average beer.

Tallahassee, Fl - New Leaf Market - 22 oz bomber. Dark black as tar pour with a thick frothy off-white head, nice sticky lacing. Aroma is doughy with hints of chocolate and light whiffs of spruce. Flavor has some marshmallow notes, some faint citrus bitterness, hints of chocolate. Thick sticky mouthfeel - overall excellent. Best I have had from Fort Collins.

Medium body with a dry slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a good complex beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 TheJester (1460) - Peterborough, Ontario, CANADA - APR 23, 2012
650 mL bottle. Appearance and aroma are fairly typical, although the aroma is perhaps a little mild. The flavour leans a little more to the IPA side than the black side, but it is very smooth and drinkable. A really nice beer.
