4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Really enjoy this IPA. Pours deep and dark, with a little bit of a red hue to it. Head is thick but dissipates down. Has a nice creamy texture for an IPA. Really nicely done!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Mouth-watering aroma is hoppy like a good IPA yet smoky like a good stout or porter. It pours an opaque dark-chocolate brown with a thick and rather persistent tan head that leaves some good lacing. Scrumptious flavor has strong hoppy, fruity and mocha notes with a burnt undertone and firm but not fierce hoppy bitterness and a noticeable alcohol bite. Firm-bodied texture is smooth yet lively, leaving a hoppy, edgy, bitter, and subtly fruit-sweet finish. I look forward to sampling more black IPAs. (Wait a minute - if you think about it, "Black IPA" is an oxymoron. How can something be black and pale at the same time?)

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Super blend of intense hops, and herbal bitterness, with roasted malt mellowness. Ten percent ABV is too high for my regular rotation, however I vote for a lower alcohol version of this in 6-packs year around!

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a darkish brown with a decent sized beige head that is frothy and stick around. Aroma of floral hops - pretty intense smell so not much else pushing through. Flavor is bitter hops (fairly bright) mixed with sweet malt and a bit of molasses. Very drinkable. Less different than a standard imperial IPA than some black IPAs, but that’s not a bad thing. Good entry in the exploding list of black IPA choices.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
22. Pours a full-on ebony, nearly opaque. Big dense creamy head. Nice rich nose, good combination of sweeter malty chocolate notes along with plenty of pine and grapefruit hop aromatics. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Interesting combination of sweet chocolate malt with all the pine and grapefruit on the mid-palate. Appealing and drinkable but still very powerful.

[Bottle] Dark mahogany hue, impressive head formation. Big piney hop and vanilla chocolate malt aroma. Impressive hop citrus from start to finish, roasted chocolate, nutty middle grows as it warms, strong citrus in the aftertaste. Definitely to my taste.

Poured into a shaker glass. Aroma is of Carmel malt, chocolate, and roast malt. Also some dark fruits. Flavor is similar. Palate is medium carbonation, slightly oily and full bodied. Overall, not my favorite black ipa, but its good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black as night with a brown head. Under intense halogen light, it shows a crystal clear deep ruby color, but still very dark. Aromas of dark molasses and brown sugar along with slight vegetal and rubber mat scents. I was expecting a "Black IPA" in the new "West Coast" style, but this is much more like a highly hopped stout! The sweet and roasted/charred malt flavors of a traditional stout are slapped upside the head by a mouth filling herbal/vegetal bitterness. It’s a very intense combination, but it mostly works. All of these flavors are left behind to linger and invite another sip. Not something I’d drink all the time, but a very interesting and unique beer.
