Sampled at an esbls tasting. Black with a tan head. The nose is rich caramel with a hint of anise. Softer hops, too. Chocolate is mixed with big hops in the flavor. The hops are bitter but somewhat indistinct. Pine and tart citrus. The aftertaste is bitter chocolate.

Bomber bought from the brewery and opened into pint glass in San Diego. Looks like night. Soapy initially thick brown head. Smells like coffee and light roasted chocolate and a crisp hop aroma. Tastes of mostly palate flooding hop crispness. Enjoyed this beer for its relatively easy drinkability for the style but if there a bit more of both malts and hops to truly be awesome. Overall 7 of 10.

Bottle. Pours with a quite a black body with a medium sized tan head with fine bubbles. Good retention with modest lacing. Aromas of roast, light tropical fruit, tangerine and pine. A good amount of milk chocolate. Very light esters on the back end. Some alcohol notes. Bready and lightly roasty malt profile, floral hop profile. Flavors of bitter chocolate, bread, some pine and citrus notes. Really short duration and somewhat sedated. Very mild in the overall bitterness from what I was expecting (thought there would be more hop bitterness ideally, or, less ideally, some malt astringency). A good amount of warming. Some fruity notes on the mid palate. Lots of chocolate, mild coffee from the roast. Medium, creamy bubbles. Roast is quite smooth, no astringency. Quite warming. Interesting, yet middle of the road, big Black IPA. No immediate faults, but nothing extraordinary either.

Bomber. Pours black with a thick velvet tan head. Flavor and taste have rich toasted malts. You can also detect vanilla, caramel, coffee and maybe a hint of pine. Light on the palate with a strong bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Excellent.

Hophead22 (2879) - Redlands, by way of Wisconsin,, California, USA - AUG 21, 2011
22oz bottle. Rating #38. Very inky black pour with a light brown head. Light aroma, a bit of chocolate and some hops in the finish. A little sweet, picking up more chocolate and light roast, but not a lot of hops really, must be hidden by the roasted malts, still a very tasty brew. (1868)

22oz bottle from BevMo. Pours a deep, fairly viscous black with a frothy beige head, nice lacing. Faint piny hops in the nose, dominated by roasted malt. Think of this beer as a hoppy Porter.

Poured from bottle to snifter. Aroma was mostly geared towards the hops on this one but with a slight sweet coffee note as well. The flavor was earthy and dry with a nice bitter sweet finish. The ABV is hidden very well on this one.

bhensonb (14162) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 9, 2011
Bomber from the Folsom BevMo. Pours very brown/black with a bubbly creamy tan head. Aroma is sort of swampy/herby citrus over dark near burnt malt. Med+ body. Flavor is quite citrus/resin over very dark burnt malt. Were talking dry and astringent. And bitter. In the finish I think resin is the winner. A little creamy chocolate note pops up, but fagetaboudit. This is bitter, bitter, bitter. Great ale.
